Workshop 6: Neonatal Central Lines Insertion Workshop

Monday, May 14
13:00 - 14:30
Location: Universe 2

Course Goal or Outcome: : It has been noted that neonatal central vascular accesses carry a great impact on the neonatal outcome especially in neonatal emergency situations. A considerable number of adverse medical outcomes are directly related to delay or failure to establish a central venous access especially in hectic neonatal emergency scenarios.
Simulation based learning is the bridge between the medical Knowledge and safe practice and it is the best learning methods as proved by evidence.
The Mobile Pediatric Simulation (MPS) Team is interested to introduce real-life hands-on neonatal scenarios which includes the different ways of central venous line insertion.
By this workshop, we aim to enhance patient safety and improve neonatal outcome.

Learning Objectives: : By the end of this workshop the participants will be able to:
1- Know the indications of different neonatal central vascular accesses (Umbilical lines, Peripherally inserted Central Catheters and femoral line) and its direct impact on the neonatal outcome.
2- Properly demonstrate the technical, psychomotor and cognitive skills required for neonatal central venous lines insertion especially in neonatal emergency situations through Inter Professional Education (IPE).
3- Take the confident and safe practice to the bedside after this unique experience.

Intended Audience: : This advanced workshop is designed to enhance the skills of both novices and professionals. Our target participants are pediatricians, neonatologists and nurses.

Relevance to the Conference: : Simulation training allows repetitive practice and errors can be made in a safe environment without clinical consequence. It is considered as the bridge between theoretical learning and safe practice.
Mobile Pediatric Simulation (MPS) introduces this Hands-On simulation experience to improve the quality of care and enhance patient safety in Neonatal Intensive Care Units (NICU).

Workshop Timeline: : Introduction: Faculty and participant introductions, verbal faculty disclosure, workshop objectives, agenda and assessment of learner’s experience with this topic (15 minutes).
Interactive session (60 minutes): The participants will be immersed in three Hands-On neonatal scenarios (20 minutes for each) directing the team to work inter professionally to insert a certain central venous line.
Debriefing, Final Summary and questions: (15 minutes).

Mohammad Bayoumi

Neonatology Fellow
Hamad Medical Corporation
Doha, Qatar

I am Dr. Mohammad Bayoumi, a Neonatal - Perinatal Fellow in Neonatal-Perinatal Fellowship Program at Hamad Medical Corporation in Qatar. I have joined the fellowship program after completing my Master and Doctorate of medicine degrees from Al – Azhar University in Cairo, and Membership of the Royal College and Child Health (MRCPCH) from the United Kingdom (UK). Besides training pediatric residents and medical students, my clinical interests focus on neonatal resuscitation simulation, team training and debriefing, inter - professional education and strategies to improve neonatal procedural success rates among trainees and neonatal providers. I did not expect to get such support from my leaders who encouraged me to do my best in the fields of neonatology and simulation based education. I was given the trust to lead the Neonatal Simulation Program in my institute. I feel that it was a great chance to unlock my potential. In addition to that, I am the director of the Pediatric Communication Skills Simulation Course and Pediatric Central Line Simulation Course which are accredited by the Qatar Council for Healthcare Practitioners. I also participate as an Instructor in the Neonatal Emergencies Simulation Course, Neonatal Resuscitation Program and Communication Skills Course.
I have been elected to be a trainee representative in the Board of Directors of the International Pediatric Simulation Society (IPSS). I am also a member of the Society for Simulation in Healthcare (SSH). My aim is not only to learn but also to disseminate and to take what I have learned in this interesting field to the bedside. I am currently involved in research studies in the field of neonatal simulation.
I am pleased to be the manager of the Mobile Pediatric Simulation (MPS) which is a group of healthcare professionals who aim to demonstrate, implement and disseminate unique high quality pediatric simulation-based experience everywhere in the globe. We have conducted several pediatric and neonatal simulation sessions in many countries. They have drawn both local and regional participants. Our Director, Dr. Mostafa Elbaba got the best poster and the best oral presentation in IPSSW2017, so we hope for more in Amsterdam!
