Workshop 11: SimZones: An organizational innovation for simulation programs and centers

Course Goal or Outcome: : In this workshop, participants will learn an innovative system for organization of simulation-based learning, called “SimZones.” This innovative strategy can aid and impact major challenges in simulation, including training simulation teaching faculty, optimizing both practical and non-technical skills at the individual and team level, and organizing simulation delivery in various environments. Participants will learn how to use the following zones:
Zone 0 – Auto-feedback simulations, often using virtual simulation technology
Zone 1 – Simulation using pause-principle teaching for hands-on instruction of foundational clinical skills
Zone 2 – Simulation for acute situational instruction, such as clinical “mock codes”
Zone 3 – Simulations involving authentic, native teams, intending to facilitate teamwork development and system optimization
Zone 4 – Translation of debriefing methods from Zone 3 simulations to real patient care settings


Learning Objectives: : - Identify the challenges associated with simulation-based training in a hospital environment
- Demonstrate the ease and efficacy of SimZones as a robust tool for organization of simulation activities both in-situ and at a hospital simulation center


Intended Audience: : The SimZones model serves an organizing function for those aspects of postgraduate medical and professional education that can be addressed via simulation. This workshop is appropriate for technicians, educators, and administrators with any level of simulation knowledge, as well as any medical and psychological professionals working in a hospital environment.

Relevance to the Conference: : The contents of this workshop are applicable to anyone in attendance with involvement in simulation-based learning. Professionals at various levels and within unique departments can readily apply the SimZones approach to the development, management, and organization of a simulation program.

- Workshop agenda and objectives (10 minutes)
- Didactic education of the SimZones approach (20 minutes)
- Developmental Mapping activity (20 minutes)
- Guided zone-based course design (20 minutes)
- Final summary, conclusions, and questions (10 minutes)

Chris Roussin is Academic and Research Director of the Simulator Program at Boston Children's Hospital and faculty member at Harvard Medical School in the Department of Anesthesiology, Perioperative and Pain Medicine. He is a leader, teacher and researcher of team performance and learning, an experienced change leader, and a leader in the development and delivery of simulation-based learning programs and systems. His research is published in Journal of Management, Academic Medicine, Journal of Applied Psychology, and a number of other outlets.

Kelsey Graber is the Clinical Research Coordinator for the Boston Children's Hospital Simulator Program (SIMPeds). She received a Bachelor's degree in Psychology from Boston University and a Master's degree in Developmental Psychology and Neuroscience from University College London and Yale University. She has engaged in psychological and medical research at the Royal London Hospital, Yale New Haven Hospital, and Boston Children's Hospital.

A practicing pediatric intensive care unit physician, Dr. Weinstock combines >20 years in surgery, medicine, education and innovation to lead the Boston Children's Simulator Program (SIMPeds) to one of largest most integrated "return on investment" simulator enterprises world-wide. Dr. Weinstock has weaved sustainable medical simulation ecosystems into the fabric of medical centers and regional health care systems on 6 continents and is founding president of the International Pediatric Simulation Society (IPSS). He serves on multiple advisory boards including education, simulation, social robotics and AI, and lectures internationally including "TED" on combining simulation, human factors, 3DP and special effects -- all to prepare world-class clinicians and healthcare systems to perform at their best, as well as to reduce fear and anxiety in patients and families.
