Workshop 10: Stress Testing a New Construction or Process Using Simulation

Course Goal or Outcome: : Opening a new clinical space or implementing a new clinical process creates potential patient and staff safety threats and challenges care teams. Simulation can be utilized at every phase of planning to identify, prevent, prepare for and monitor latent safety threats. This workshop will provide the knowledge and tools necessary to incorporate simulation-based methodologies into planning a move to a new space or implementing a new clinical process. Concrete examples of low and high technology methods will be discussed, advocating a right tool for the job. Discussion will cover the full spectrum of applying simulation to environment and processes, starting with performing a needs assessment and ending with evaluation tools.

Learning Objectives: : Learning Objectives:
1. Develop a simulation-based project plan for a new space or clinical process
2. Utilize structured debriefing to measure latent safety threats in an environment or system
3. Identify assessment tools and methodologies that can be used to evaluate new clinical spaces or processes

Intended Audience: : Simulationists planning or interested in learning how to utilize simulation for designing or evaluating new clinical spaces and /or clinical processes. Applicable to all levels of simulation experience.

Relevance to the Conference: : Simulation is increasingly being used for systems, environment and process design and testing. This workshop will give participants practical information about how to effectively plan for, implement and assess a simulation project for this purpose.

David Kessler, MD, MSc, is a longtime student of the growing art & science of simulation. David’s experience with simulation-based medical education, standardized patients, patient outcome oriented research, quality improvement, and change management has resulted to numerous grant-funded studies and peer-reviewed publications. As the director of clinical simulation for the Pediatric Emergency Medicine Division at Columbia University Medical Center David has focused on leveraging inter-professional simulation (in situ) to grow the culture of safety, strengthen teamwork/communication, and improve patient care. As co-director and one of the co-founders for INSPIRE, (International Network for Simulation-based Pediatric Innovation, Research and Education) an international pediatric research network focused on outcome oriented simulation research in acute care, resuscitation and skills—David has helped to grow a community of practice dedicated to collaboration and mentorship among investigators committed to scholarship in simulation. Personal interests include using simulation to plan and assess new clinical spaces, and integrating innovative technology into healthcare.

Lennox Huang, MD

Dr. Lennox Huang is the Chief Medical Officer and Vice President for Medical and Academic Affairs at the Hospital for Sick Children in Toronto, Canada. He is a staff physician in the Pediatric Critical Care Unit at Sick Kids and holds the rank of Associate Professor in the Department of Paediatrics at the University of Toronto and Associate Clinical Professor of Pediatrics at McMaster University.

Dr. Huang’s past leadership roles include Chair of the Department of Pediatrics at McMaster University and the Chief of Pediatrics at Hamilton Health Sciences and St. Joseph's Healthcare Hamilton. Dr. Huang has held leadership roles at the regional, provincial and national level including President of the Regional Medical Associates of Hamilton, and Vice President of the Paediatric Chairs of Canada.

Dr. Huang’s interests are in the areas of simulation, patient safety, and quality improvement. He has led projects using Lean principles and in-situ simulation to guide the design and testing of clinical spaces and has incorporated simulation into hospital-wide safety initiatives.

Travis Whitfill, MPH

Travis Whitfill is an Associate Research Scientist in the Department of Pediatrics. His background began in molecular biology and biochemistry, after receiving scientific training at the MD Anderson Cancer Center and Duke University. He is the co-founder of several additional startup companies, including a Connecticut-based microbiome company, Azitra Inc. He brings strong background in entrepreneurship and business, and is also a partner in a venture capital fund, Bios Partners, bringing experience in public markets, drug development, and venture capital investments.

His research interests are in pediatric emergency medicine and health policy and to improve pediatric acute care across the United States.
