Poster Presentation

Water Temperature’s Influence on the Rate of Turbidity Decay in Sediment Basins

Tuesday, February 13
1:30 PM - 3:30 PM

Level of Presentation: Beginner

This presentation will brief you on water temperature’s effects on the rate of settling in sedimentation basins. It is important to learn how this trend may change the design of sediment control devices in your geographical area will lead to less turbid water discharged back to the areas around the site and improved protection to surrounding ecosystems.

In almost every stormwater construction site erosion control manual, best management practices give guidelines for design of sediment basins, including the minimum design time for water to be detained to allow particulate to settle. Stormwater runoff is an especially important topic on construction sites because of their elevated sediment runoff rates.

This study takes a closer look at the effect of water temperature on the sedimentation rate in construction sediment basins and how to design for minimum detention hours in order to reach a desired level of turbidity in discharged water. This research evaluated the settling of suspended material in a simulated sediment basin. Water temperature was adjusted to assess the rate of turbidity decay over the course of dewatering periods.
