This will be a presentation of water balance and evapotranspiration results from bioretention cells, with data from one of the most precise instruments for measuring ET - the weighing lysimeter.
Bioretention cells are a green infrastructure technology with design goals of improving a site’s water balance by reducing runoff volume. Bioretention cells achieve this aim by infiltration and evapotranspiration. The majority of bioretention water balance studies use models and abstractions based on temperature, humidity, wind speed or use correction factors applied to evaporation pan data. These models have been developed for applications such as agriculture or reservoir management, and may not necessarily apply to understanding the urban water context. In this study, a weighing lysimeter was used at a bioretention cell located in Vaughan, Ontario. The lysimeter weighs a soil column continuously, and contains sensors for water potential, water content, temperature and conductivity. This poster shows the results of evapotranspiration monitoring at a single bioretention cell over the summer and fall seasons in 2017. Results are compared to evaporation pan measurements taken close to the bioretention site, as well as to previous estimations of evapotranspiration from bioretention studies. The result is a more accurate view of the water balance of a small system in the urban environment.

Sylvie Spraakman has been working in water resources engineering for five years and is now completing a PhD specializing in long term performance of low impact development technologies. Her PhD will focus on the long term performance of bioretention cells and design factors that lead to success. She is actively involved in increasing student engagement in IECA, and is starting a University of Toronto chapter of IECA.
