Coir is the natural coir fibre extracted from the mesocarp of the coconut husk and is the strongest among lignocellulosic fibres. Coir yarn , spun from the fibre (which has close resemblance to wood) has proven properties of strength for use as scaffold joints in building construction and is resistant to weather conditions during cyclic usage in fishing boats in salt water and hot weather conditions. The positive effect of application of coir netting on the embankment of roads to stabilize the slope and establishment of vegetation has been reported widely in the literature. Geotextiles offer significant benefit when used in road construction. The common practices adopted for improving the strength and stiffness of soft soil sub grade is by replacing the unsuitable soil, by providing transverse reinforcement and by innovative ground modification. Reinforcing the sub grade using coir fabrics helps to distribute the load over a wider area and results in enhanced bearing capacity and reduce the settlement. This study was carried out in the Vellar Theru Road at Orthanadu Block in Thanjavur district in Tamil Nadu , India.1. Coir Geotextile has been shown to be effective in reinforcing rural road sections.Pavement Performance studies show that Coir Geotextile reinforced rural road sections produce lesser rut as compared to unreinforced control sections. As compared to the control section, the section reinforced with coir geotextiles have shown improved functional performance in terms of better surface condition, delayed pothole and crack initiation and progression.Coir in the form of geotextile is advantageous for strengthening of weak soils since it reduces the settlement of soil subgrade. Coir geotextiles have thus shown some promising prospect as a suitable alternative to geosynthetic reinforcement for in the construction of roads on agrarian soils.
