Living Shorelines systems are alternative shoreline stabilization techniques that help maintain the natural interface between land and water while preserving the habitat, protecting the environment and enhancing coastal resilience to reduce erosion. This presentation reviews design considerations to offer containment, reinforcement and better vegetation establishment which are three keys to successful Living Shoreline projects.

Craig Kolodgle

Dr. Craig Kolodge is the West Coast Regional Director of Business and Field Development for Filtrexx International, a pioneer in the use of locally recycled organics for creating environmentally sustainable solutions with a special focus on erosion and sediment control and Low Impact Development, including the stabilization and restoration of shorelines. Dr. Kolodge is the former academic advisor, field plant pathologist and director for the University of California Cooperative Extension (UCCE) and the Agriculture & Natural Resources Research and Extension Center in Santa Clara county. As superintendent of the UC Bay Area Research and Extension Center (BAREC), Dr. Kolodge was instrumental in developing the City of San Jose’s green waste utilization program focused on repurposing recycled organics to deliver ecosystem benefits. Dr. Kolodge is a Certified Professional in Erosion and Sediment Control (CPESC) and a Trainer of Record (ToR) for California’s Storm Water Industrial General Permit and has worked in San Diego county where he resides as well as throughout the Western U.S. teaching the use of sustainable management practices (SMP’s) for land conservation and restoration.
