Erosion and Sediment Control
Level of Presentation: All: Suitable for a broad audience
SEDspread is a user-friendly spreadsheet-based design tool for designers to appropriately size sediment basin parameters. The workbook allows users to input site specific parameters and constraints to determine: basin capacity and configuration, surface skimmer size and dewatering rate, auxiliary spillway design, and baffle configuration. The workbook includes a summary sheet that provides users with schematics of the designed basin, available as a supplement to facilitate effective communication between designers and contractors for constructing/installing the basin. SEDspread includes geospatially derived and referenced data that allows for automated selection of design hydrologic and soil conditions through the input of a project location's U.S. ZIP code. Sizing can be based off: local 2-yr, 24-hr rainfall event (by ZIP code), regulatory guidance, or through manual sizing input.

Michael Perez is an assistant professor in Iowa State University's Department of Civil, Construction and Environmental Engineering. His research specializes in investigating construction and post-construction stormwater practices, methods and technologies. Perez earned his doctorate degree (2016) and masters degree (2014) in civil engineering from Auburn University. He earned his bachelors degree (2012) from Florida State University with a double major in civil engineering and environmental engineering. Perez conducted research at the Auburn University – Erosion and Sediment Control Testing Facility, where he investigated and improved department of transportation standard stormwater management practices using large-scale testing techniques. He has performed investigations into the application of using unmanned aerial vehicle technology for construction and stormwater inspections. In addition, he has industry experience managing a DOT MS4 program and designing low impact development and green infrastructure stormwater practices for roadway projects.
