Stringent ventilation and airtightness requirements are becoming commonplace in the high performance homes industry, and green building rating systems are encouraging and sometimes requiring various IAQ provisions. Do these challenging requirements guarantee acceptable indoor air quality? How important are source control, ventilation and air cleaning equipment in comparison to occupant awareness? How important is commissioning? Are some controls more robust than others? What are the most important sources of IAQ problems? This session will present results from lab and field studies including a recent survey of new homes in California.

Brett C. Singer, Ph.D., is the Indoor Environment Group Leader and a Staff Scientist in the Whole Building Systems Department at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory. He conceives and leads research studies of air pollutant sources, processes, exposures, and control strategies to achieve healthy environments in low-energy use homes and commercial buildings.

Dr. Iain Walker is a scientist at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (LBNL). He has more than 25 years of experience as a building scientist, conducting research on energy use, ventilation & IAQ, moisture, performance simulation, and commissioning/diagnostic issues in residential buildings. His current work focuses on IAQ, retrofits, Zero/Low Energy Homes and heating, ventilation, and air-conditioning (HVAC) systems in residential buildings through field and laboratory evaluations, modeling and simulation activities, and standards setting.
