Using HPXML to Deliver More Value at a Lower Cost

Home performance contractors have not typically realized the benefits associated with data standardization when programs have integrated the data standard, HPXML, into their software. But data standards are crucial for improving the quality, consistency, and interoperability of home performance-related data. For example, if contractors have access to high-quality performance data prior to the close of sale, they may be able to more precisely target customers likely to invest in efficiency and home performance improvements. In addition, data standards can be used to integrate into other operational systems and processes, reducing the amount of paperwork and headache. This session will discuss how the adoption of HPXML is currently impacting the cost of contractor participation in home performance program, examine ways programs can invest in market-based delivery systems using HPXML, and provide an update on industry progress to adopt data standards and a roadmap to the future.

Dale Hoffmeyer

Energy Technology Program Specialist
U.S. Department of Energy

Dale Hoffmeyer works in DOE's Building Technology Office to advance technologies and policies that improve energy performance in existing residential buildings. He also leads activities to demonstrate how energy upgrade programs can streamline processes to serve more homes across the country. Previously, Dale worked at the Environmental Protection Agency in the ENERGY STAR program. His residential energy efficiency experience includes home energy benchmarking, HVAC quality installation, and program evaluation.

Ali Adler

Ali Adler is a business development professional passionate about resource efficiency entrepreneurship, currently leading strategic partnerships at Sealed (sealed.com) to drive the energy efficiency finance startup's growth. In the past she has held numerous roles supporting the development of hundreds of clean technology companies: at the Northeast Clean Energy Council (NECEC) she founded, designed and launched Cleantech Navigate Northeast, a first of its kind year-round resource network for entrepreneurs. She also served as chair and, previously, executive director of Cleantech Open Northeast, the region's premier cleantech start-up accelerator program. Other past projects include three cleantech delegations for trade missions with Massachusetts Governor Deval Patrick, the first annual Massachusetts Clean Energy Jobs Report, and the College Sustainability Report Card.

Noel Merket

Research Engineer
National Renewable Energy Laboratory

Noel is a Research Engineer in the Buildings and Thermal Systems center at the National Renewable Energy Laboratory. He develops and maintains the Home Performance XML (HPXML) data transfer standard and supports its adoption in the industry as co-chair of the HPXML working group. He also leads the development of residential building capabilities for the open source EnergyPlus building energy simulation software and develops data analysis and visualization tools for NREL's ResStock large-scale building stock simulation software. Noel has a B.S. and M.S. in Mechanical Engineering from Utah State University with an emphasis in fluid and thermal systems and computational methods and is a licensed Professional Engineer in the state of Colorado.

Greg Thomas is CEO of Performance Systems Development. He is also chair of the Efficiency First trade organization, a member of the RESNET board of directors, recipient of the Building Performance Institute Life Time Achievement Award in 2010 and the past president of Affordable Comfort, Inc. Greg has 30 years in building performance as a consultant, trainer, and whole house contractor.
