Impact of Home Performance on Childhood Asthma in Market-Rate Homes

Despite strong evidence that home performance strategies improve health outcomes in the Weatherization Assistance Program, little research has been done in market rate homes in this country. Until now. The HEALTH-R Study, www.healthyhomestudy.com, examines the link between enhancing indoor air quality and reducing childhood asthma symptoms. This pilot study is taking place in Maryland and results will be available in early 2018.  This session will offer one of the first forums to describe the home performance activities tested and disseminate the findings. The results could provide home performance contractors with a blueprint on the elements needed to successfully sell the idea of a healthy home to market rate customers.

Laura facilitates the identification, research, development, and qualification of new disruptive technologies and services for Efficiency Vermont's future portfolio. Her current projects cover a wide variety of topics such as healthy homes, low-cost monitoring for small commercial and using advanced metering information to impact grid load shapes. Previously, Laura led the Advanced Commercial Buildings Initiative and Residential Green Building Services department for Southface Energy Institute in Atlanta, GA. Laura holds degrees in sustainable development and building construction from Appalachian State and Georgia Tech respectively, and numerous industry certifications and awards.

Brian Toll founded ecobeco in 2008 to focus on helping consumers adopt energy-efficiency solutions. Brian is a member of the ASHRAE 62.2 Indoor Air Quality Subcommittee. Brian is currently Chair of the Maryland Building Performance Association (formerly Efficiency First Maryland). Brian has an MBA from MIT Sloan and a Bachelors in Economics from the University of Pennsylvania.

Jonathan Wilson

Deputy Director
National Center for Healthy Housing

Jonathan Wilson has worked for NCHH since 1993 and currently serves as Deputy Director and Chief Financial Officer. He has served as a program manager for research, technical assistance, and policy work. Mr. Wilson helped coordinate the Evaluation of the HUD Lead Hazard Control Grant Program, the largest and most comprehensive study of lead hazard control in housing ever undertaken in the United States. His current work includes assessment of the effects of energy efficiency on resident health and methods to protect residents from radon exposure. Mr. Wilson has authored more than 25 peer-reviewed research manuscripts evaluating assessment tools and interventions for healthy housing hazards. He came to NCHH with a background in nonprofit housing development and a Master of Public Policy degree.
