Maximizing Energy Reductions with Non-traditional Electricity Savings

A growing assortment of appliances, mechanical, and miscellaneous devices add up to significant energy use in many homes. Whether motivated by cost savings or carbon reduction, pinpointing and addressing electric use often requires a sleuthing exercise. This involves discovering how hardware, habits, and controls function and using feedback and occupant involvement to stimulate change. We will look at a raft of sneaky culprits including dehumidifiers, air handlers, clothes dryers, and water pumps, and explore news from the home electronics front. Join us to examine and develop strategies to engage residents in meeting goals for reduced electric use.

Linda Wigington is the founder of and has been associated with the Affordable Comfort Conference from its inception in 1986 until 2013. These regional and national events have been instrumental in building the capacity to deliver a whole house approach which addresses the integration of health, safety, durability, and energy performance. Recently, Linda has served as the team leader for the Reducing Outdoor Contaminants in Indoor Spaces (ROCIS) initiative which is funded by The Heinz Endowments (http://ROCIS.org). The goal is to empower champions who work within housing, energy efficiency, environmental advocacy, healthy schools, sustainability, and health-related sectors with the outcome of enhanced collaboration and initiatives to protect indoor spaces and their occupants from outdoor pollution. The ROCIS Low Cost Monitoring Project began in fall of 2015.

Rana Belshe, Conservation Connection Consulting Principal, has been an independent conservation, efficiency, & education consultant since 1983. She works with groups across the country to increase the likelihood that residents of all persuasions make household choices that reduce waste and pollution. A recovering techie & proponent of life-long learning, she is proud of having written WisWAP's first Technical Standards in 1982, led DOE's Baseload & Occupant Education Standard Work Specifications (SWS) process in 2010, & co-presented on human comfort at the first Affordable Comfort conference in 1986. She celebrates the progress we've made as individuals & organizations within this maturing industry, and is glad she lives in the Wisconsin woods where the changing seasons bring constant renewal.
