125. Expert Panel: Nutrition Implications of Disaster Relief in Puerto Rico

The effects of Hurricanes Maria and Irma in 2017 left much of Puerto Rico without power, clean water, and nutrition. In this panel session, you will hear from experts in the fields of clinical nutrition, public health, foodservice, and agriculture on how these natural disasters have affected the populations’ overall nutrition. The nutrition implications of the continued efforts in Puerto Rico on food safety and access, farming, eating behaviors, and more will be discussed.

Zachari Breeding, MS, RDN, LDN, FAND

Zachari Breeding, MS, RDN, LDN, FAND is a registered, licensed dietitian and professional chef in Philadelphia. He is the owner and executive chef for The Sage: Nutritious Solutions, a personalized nutrition and off-site catering company. He holds lectures nationwide, both at the University and corporate levels, on a wide array of nutrition-related topics. Zach holds experience as the vice-chair of the Committee of Lifelong Learning, chair of the Cystic Fibrosis Nutrition sub-unit of the Medical Nutrition Practice dietetic practice group, and former chair of the Latinos and Hispanics in Dietetics and Nutrition member interest group. Zach serves as the delegate for the Philadelphia and Lehigh Valley regions and acts as a public policy ambassador for the Pennsylvania Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics. He is also a contributing author to Food and Nutrition Magazine and the Stone Soup blog.

Marlene Ramirez, LND, RDN

Marlene is a Registered Dietitian and Nutritionist with a BS Degree in Nutrition and Dietetics from the University of Puerto Rico, Río Piedras Campus. She completed her Dietetic Internship Program at the University of Puerto Rico, Medical Sciences Campus in 2015. Marlene started her work experience as a Renal Dietitian at Atlantis Healthcare in Puerto Rico where she worked with hemodialysis patients. Marlene is an active member of the PRAND and actively collaborates with the public policy area. She spoke at the 2017 PRAND Annual Conference with the topic: Legislative Process in Puerto Rico for Nutrition Professionals. She is a certified Renal Educator in Puerto Rico and is an active member of the Council of Renal Dietitians at the PR Renal Counsel. She has collaborated with the social media and web page divison of the Nutritionist and Dietitian Association of Puerto Rico. She is the co-founder of Vianda Buena, a small local distribution company of farm products which has the mission to promote food security and healthy eating while support local agro-industry. Her passion for nutrition goes hand in hand with her commitment to health, food security and diseases prevention in Puerto Rico.

Alana Marrero Gonzalez, LDN, MHSN

Alana has ten years of experience in the dietetics field- both working with patients with HIV/AIDS and as an instructor for the Coordinated Program of Nutrition and Dietetics in Puerto Rico. She is currently providing nutritional services to the transgender community. Her research has been mostly concentrated on HIV/AIDS and community nutrition. Alana’s Master's thesis was titled 'Changes in the nutritional status of adults with HIV / AIDS participating of Bill's Kitchen: A Community Based Nutritional Organization in San Juan, Puerto Rico’. This investigation was selected as a Poster Presentation in the 2014 Food & Nutrition Conference & Expo™ (FNCE®) in Atlanta, GA and was presented as an oral presentation at the 2011 Caribbean HIV Conference. Alana was selected as Dietitian Educator of the Year by the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics Chapter of Puerto Rico in March 2015 and was the President of the Affiliate Chapter of Puerto Rico.

Rayna Hichez Coste, LDN

Rayna Hichez-Coste is a Licensed Dietitian Nutritionist who started her professional career managing Wellness Programs under IR Consulting Group, followed by 5 years as clinical dietitian at the APCH, where she helped acheive monthly workshops for patients with ostomy. She currently serves as a Nutritionist Dietitian Coordinator I, at the WIC Program, where she assisted outreach division during Zika emergency and Annual Breastfeeding Conferences. In this position, also serves as liaison between the Department of Agriculture and Department of Health for Farmers Market Nutrition Program. During hurricane season 2017, she was assigned temporarily in Toa Baja WIC clinic. When she’s not at her full-time job, Ms Hichez provides professional services for Monsanto Caribe’s L.E.A.D. Network.
An active member of PRAND, who has served in appointed and elected positions, on all levels of the Board of Director during the past 8 years. She is also part of PR Renal Council Board of Directors since 2014, were she helped make possible the Renal Dietitian Council. As a proven leader in nutrition and dietetics profession, Rayna has served as speaker in multiple PRAND Annual Conferences and has designed certified courses for Dietitians and culinary students. Her delivery and ability to bring the nutrition message to the audience, has made her one of the most trusted resource in the radio and television media. Her passion for nutrition and healthcare has leaded her to contributed proficiently with the PR ACS, PR Diabetes Association, Central American and Caribbean Games 2010, among multiple community organizations.

Suzanne Jimenez Sanchez, RD, LND, DEPR, ER

Suzanne is a Registered Dietitian Nutritionist currently working in the Head Start/ Early Head Start Program of the municipality of Bayamón, Puerto Rico. She graduated with honors from the University of Puerto Rico, completed her Dietetic Internship with the Department of Health of Puerto Rico, and is currently working on her Online Master of Arts in Nutrition and Wellness degree with a focus on Entrepreneurship from Benedictine University. Some of her past work experiences include: private practice, both home-based and in a physician’s office, and participation in promotion and marketing jobs, including wellness programs. Suzanne has been a member of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics for eight years. For the past four years, she has served as an active member of the Board of Directors in the Academy’s Puerto Rico affiliate. During this time, she has contributed to several local newspaper articles and blog pages, and two Facebook live videos talking about the importance of the nutrition and dietetics profession and about healthy snack alternatives for preschool kids. She has also served as a guest speaker in multiple settings. As a community dietitian, Suzanne thrives on teaching and encouraging people to make healthier choices.
