432. Debate: A Conversation on Weight Management and Health at Every Size®

Recent conversations on obesity, calorie control and weight management in the news, on social media, and among nutrition professionals have reflected a growing breadth and complexity in approaches to health and weight. The potential health impacts of weight loss, the right diet to achieve an individual’s goal, Health at Every Size® (HAES®), disordered eating, and weight stigma, among other topics, indicate divergent approaches to weight. Where do these approaches align? How might they conflict? What obligations do nutrition professionals have when addressing weight management approaches within the context of the Academy’s Code of Ethics? This session, presented in debate format, will provide an opportunity to hear the body of evidence behind two practice methods, calorie control and HAES, along with perspective on the concept of health and the role of the RDN in achieving health via each method. The session will close with identifying resource’s that exist for RDNs to use in practice for weight management.

Constance Diekman, M.Ed., RD, CSSD, LD, FADA, FAND

Connie Diekman is a Nutrition Communications Consultant and Director of University Nutrition at Washington University in St. Louis, Missouri. A Former President of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics, Diekman served on the Academy House of Delegates Leadership Team and the Board of Directors from 2004 - 2009. She is a former chair of the American Heart Association – Missouri affiliate. A former Academy media spokesperson who continues to provide professional comments to the media, she has been quoted in thousands of magazines, newspapers and online channels; she has appeared in countless radio and television interviews at the local and national level, including the Oprah and TODAY shows. For 17 years she was the voice of the “Eating Right” minute on WBBM radio in Chicago and is a former television nutrition reporter with St. Louis’ NBC and the local FOX affiliates. She is the author of “The Everything Mediterranean Diet Book” and the recently released “Superfoods Nuts”

Hollie Raynor, PhD, RD, LDN

Hollie Raynor, PhD, RD, LDN, is a Professor in the Department of Nutrition, and the Interim Assistant Dean of Research for the College of Education, Health, and Human Sciences at the University of Tennessee. She holds a MS in Public Health Nutrition and a PhD in Clinical Psychology, and is a registered dietitian and a licensed psychologist. She conducts research in lifestyle interventions for pediatric and adult weight management, has published over 130 peer-reviewed articles, and has received funding from the National Institutes of Health, American Diabetes Association, Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics Foundation, and Weight Watcher’s, Int, for her research. She serves as a member of the National Committee for Clinical Guidelines for Obesity for the American Psychological Association and has served as a member of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics’ (AND’s) Prediabetes Evidence Analysis Library Committee.

Christy Harrison, MPH, RD, CDN

Christy Harrison, MPH, RD, CDN is a registered dietitian nutritionist and certified intuitive eating counselor based in Brooklyn, NY. She offers online courses and private coaching to help people all over the world make peace with food and their bodies. Since 2013 Christy has hosted Food Psych, a podcast about intuitive eating, Health at Every Size, eating-disorder recovery, and body acceptance. It is now one of iTunes’ top 100 health podcasts, reaching tens of thousands of listeners worldwide each week. Christy began her career in 2003 as a food and nutrition journalist, and her forthcoming book about diet culture will be published by Little, Brown Spark in December 2019. She lives in Brooklyn, NY, with her husband and a cat named Harry Harrison.

Robert Kushner, MD, MS

Robert Kushner is Professor of Medicine at Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine, and Director of the Center for Lifestyle Medicine in Chicago, IL, USA. He completed a post-graduate fellowship in Clinical Nutrition and earned a Master’s degree in Clinical Nutrition and Nutritional Biology from the University of Chicago. He is past-President of The Obesity Society (TOS), the American Society for Parenteral and Enteral Nutrition (ASPEN), the American Board of Physician Nutrition Specialists (ABPNS), past-Chair of the American Board of Obesity Medicine (ABOM), and Co-Editor of Current Obesity Reports. He was recently awarded the ‘2016 Clinician-of-the-Year Award’ by The Obesity Society.
