370. Beyond the Status Quo: Real-world Application Driving Quality Improvement

Session Level 2 - Intermediate

Do you want to take the nutrition profession, as well as operations at your organization, to the next level? In this session, you will learn about the innovative Standards of Excellence (SoE) Metric Tool developed by the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics. The SoE Metric Tool will help you identify and evaluate leadership opportunities in the essential area of quality improvement, including Leadership, Practice, Outcomes, and Organization. You will gain insight about methods to identify and study problems, data collection techniques, and data-driven problem solving. A real-world case study using the SoE Metric Tool to identify gaps and develop quality improvement will be presented. In small groups, you will brainstorm with your peers about applying the SoE Metric Tool to design quality improvement projects and collaborate about strategies to take your operations to the next level!

Shari Baird, MS, RD, CPHQ, LSSBB

Shari Baird is a Therapeutic Nutrition Specialist with Abbott Nutrition where she partners with key stakeholders in hospitals, long-term acute care and rehab facilities. She assists in providing current and comprehensive clinical knowledge and best in class practices to and supports facilities in identifying barriers and gaps where there are opportunities to improve and implement solutions. Prior to her work with Abbott, Shari had over 8 years of experience with the Department of Veterans Affairs and has served as an ambulatory care dietitian before joining the quality department. Most recently at the VA, she was a Health Systems Specialist where she managed the quality improvement program at a facility, and provided education, facilitation, and lead clinical and administrative teams on systems and quality improvement projects.

Alexandra Kazaks, PhD, RDN, CDE

Alexandra Kazaks, PhD, RDN, CDE
Alexandra Kazaks is a professor at Bastyr University, Seattle Washington where she teaches advanced nutrition topics for students in the DPD program. She received a doctorate in Nutritional Biology from the University of California, Davis. Her research has extended to magnesium and asthma management, the effects of plant-based foods on weight management and vascular disease risk factors. Her published works include numerous journal articles, book chapters, and books on micronutrients, metabolic syndrome, and obesity. Dr. Kazaks is a frequent speaker both in the US and internationally on these topics.

Kimi McAdam, MS, RD

Kimi McAdam, MS, RD, is the Food and Nutrition Systems Manager for National Nutrition Services at Kaiser Permanente. Her role is to help drive initiatives and organizational improvements in nutrition and dietetics throughout the Kaiser organization. Previous to that, she was the Assistant Department Administrator for the Food and Nutrition Services Department at the Kaiser Medical Center in Anaheim, CA. She has a Masters of Science degree in Nutrition and Dietetics from California State University at Long Beach, and is an Improvement Advisor at Kaiser.
