Interest in food and nutrition innovation is on the rise, with thousands of new businesses vying for investor dollars in recent years. Dietitians bring valuable expertise to these organizations and can serve in a variety of functions, from marketing and public relations to product-related roles. Working for a startup offers unique opportunities for professional growth and financial gain; however, it also comes with risks. This session covers how to identify startup opportunities, market yourself and navigate the startup world as a dietitian. Join two startups veterans as they discuss their paths and share their learnings with other tech-savvy RDNs.

Edwina Clark, MS, RD, APD, CSSD

Edwina is the Head of Nutrition and Wellness at Yummly, where she is responsible for developing new nutrition solutions and food content for over 26 million Yummly users. She has worked for several early stage businesses as a nutrition expert, content creator, and brand spokesperson.

Prior to joining tech, Edwina worked in corporate wellness for EXOS, serving clients such as State Street Bank, Google Europe, and Intel. She regularly contributes to the media, and has been featured in SELF magazine, Women's Health, Glamour, and Teen Vogue.

Edwina hails from Sydney, Australia, and begun her American dream with a track scholarship in 2004. She is dually credentialed as a dietitian in the US and Australia, and a certified specialty sports dietitian. Edwina also serves on the board of the Bay Area District branch of CAND, and the Nutrition Entrepreneurs DPG. In addition to her other commitments, she also maintains her own health and wellness blog, edwinaclark.com.

Tara Linitz, MS, RD

Tara is a Senior Account Executive at FoodMinds, a division of Padilla. FoodMinds provides consulting and communications services specializing in harnessing science, public affairs, food values and communications to meet business and public health objectives.

Prior to joining FoodMinds, Tara was the Nutrition Manager at a digital health company, EatLove. She co-built the nutrition algorithm for EatLove’s professional platform and has extensive background and experience in nutrition analysis, health professional educational content development, and events management.

Previously, she worked as an outpatient dietitian for 4 years at Massachusetts General Hospital where she specialized in gastrointestinal nutrition and food allergies.

Tara is a member of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics’ Nutrition Entrepreneurs practice group, as well as the California Association of Nutrition and Dietietcs.

She received her Bachelor of Science in Nutrition and Dietetics from Cornell University, and her Masters Degree in Exercise Science and Public Health from Northeastern University.

Sonja Goedkoop, MSPH, RD

Sonja is the Head of Nutrition at Square, Inc., where she leads the nutrition team for Caviar (Square's meal delivery platform). She is responsible for overseeing the implementation of health initiatives across the platform, including nutrition analysis of restaurant dishes, allergen tagging, and other health promotions. Prior to working at Square, she was the Head of Food Programs at Zesty, Inc., a B2B food delivery marketplace startup that was acquired by Square. Sonja has prior experience as an outpatient dietitian at the Massachusetts General Hospital, providing nutrition care for patients undergoing bariatric surgery as well as leading behavioral weight loss programs. Sonja is also a consultant for the American Institute for Cancer Research (AICR), where she writes web articles and recipe blogs. Her other projects include writing continuing education courses for dietitians and presenting at national conferences.
