336. Innovative Counseling Strategies for Disordered Eating: Mindful Practices and Internal Family Systems

Sunday, October 21
3:30 PM - 5:00 PM
CE: 1.5

Session Level 2 - Intermediate

This session will focus on Innovative treatment strategies proving effective for disordered eating. We'll explore evidence-based mindfulness and Internal Family Systems (IFS) strategies that RDN's can employ in practice and how these two distinct approaches overlap and support each other. The usefulness of mindfulness and mindful eating as an intervention to skillfully navigate food beliefs, thoughts, feelings and behaviors, reduce binge eating, improve eating patterns, improve health and well-being will be explored through case studies and research. The concepts and processes of IFS, an evidence-based therapeutic intervention is particularly effective in treating the trauma underlying many disordered eating patterns. This will be examined from a dietitian's perspective. The role of the nutrition professional in IFS-oriented treatment will be explored through case studies that show the self-protective function of polarized cognitions that drive eating disorder behaviors.
