284. Competency-Based Education: An Innovative Approach to Assessment

Sunday, October 21
8:00 AM - 9:30 AM
CE: 1.5

Session Level 3 - Advanced

The University of Southern Mississippi and Morrison Healthcare Dietetic Internship engaged in a research project to measure the achievement of interns’ competence and compare new assessment methods against traditional methods of performance evaluation. During the session, speakers will share the results of a case study involving 65 dietetic interns and affiliated preceptors who pilot-tested three different competency-based education (CBE) assessment methods, including a behavior-based interview and two capstone evaluations. An online portal tracked both formative and summative assessment strategies to assess the interns’ development of the required competencies. The presenters will share the formative and summative assessments, methodologies used to develop the tools, and results of focus groups aimed at assessing preceptor and intern perceptions of the tools and the online portal.
