274. It’s a Match! Strategies to Help You Match to a Dietetic Internship

Session Level 1 - Basic

This upbeat session will empower students with the skills and tools to secure a match to one of their top dietetic internship choices. Attendees will learn how to utilize the Academy of Nutrition & Dietetics computer matching resources, wade through the maze of internship sites to improve their match potential, create a dynamic and memorable application, choose key individuals to write strong recommendations, and ace the interview process. The speakers will share their collective 35 years of helping students secure a dietetic internship.

Lisa Brown, PhD, RD, LDN

Lisa Brown PhD, RD, LDN is an associate professor of nutrition and the dietetic internship director at Simmons College in Boston, Massachusetts. Dr Brown earned her master’s degree in Nutrition and Health Promotion from Simmons College and her doctorate in Medical Nutrition Sciences from Boston University School of Medicine. In addition to teaching, she provides dietitian vacation coverage in a long term care facility in Boston, and counsels private clients at the Metrowest YMCA in Framingham, MA, where she has worked since 1996. Dr Brown formerly held positions including Senior Nutritionist of the North Suburban WIC Program, research dietitian at Natick Labs, and clinical dietitian for Milton Hospital’s acute units as well as the Transitional Care Unit.

Joan Salge Blake, MS, RDN, LDN, FAND

Joan is a Clinical Associate Professor and Dietetic Internship Director at Boston University (BU). She was awarded the prestigious Whitney Powers Excellence in Teaching Award from the University. In 2012, she was nominated by BU for US Professor of the Year by the University. Joan has received the Massachusetts Dietetic Association (MDA) Young Registered Dietitian, the 2007 Outstanding Dietetic Educator, and the 2009 Outstanding Dietitian awards. Joan is the author of Nutrition &You, 4nd Edition, Pearson (2016), Nutrition & You: Core Concepts to Good Health, Pearson (2010), and Eat Right The E.A.S.Y. Way, Prentice Hall Press (1991). She is the co-author of Nutrition: From Science to You, Pearson/Benjamin Cummings (2018). Joan is a nutrition blogger for US News & World Report. She has conducted over 1,400 media interviews

Julia Robarts, MS, MPH, RDN, LDN

Julie Robarts is the coordinator for the dietetic internship at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center. She is a 2015 recipient of the Outstanding Educator Award from the Nutrition and Dietetics Educators of Practitioners practice group and an e-mentor with the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics. Julie is a popular annual speaker at the Massachusetts Student Dietetic Association’s Dietetic Internship Selection Workshop, and has spoken nationally at the Food and Nutrition Conference and Expo, the American Public Health Association, and the National Conference on Chronic Disease Prevention and Control. Julie is also founder of the food and nutrition blog, Juggling with Julia, where she humorously shares nutrition and cooking tips and family-tested recipes. She has published more than 300 recipes along with thousands of photo, with plans to publish a cookbook in the coming year. Prior to her years in dietetics education, Julie served as project director for a statewide obesity prevention program, and as clinical nutrition manager in both nursing homes and rehabilitation centers. She received her nutrition degree at the University of Maine and graduate degrees in public health and nutrition communications at Tufts University. She completed her dietetics training at Massachusetts General Hospital.
