268. ACEND Forum: Demonstration Program Innovations in Educating Future Practitioners

Shifting to a competency-based education model under the Future Education Model Accreditation Standards can enhance the preparation of students for future nutrition and dietetics practice. This session will explore the implementation of the future education model with its integrated, competency-based education from two experienced program directors showcasing best-practice examples. Strategies used to effectively reorganize an existing nutrition and dietetics program under the Future Education Model Accreditation Standards and unique and innovative ways for assessing competence will be shared.

Mary Gregoire, PhD, RD, FADA, FAND

Dr. Mary Gregoire is the Executive Director of the Accreditation Council of Education in Nutrition and Dietetics (ACEND), the organization that accredits 580 dietetic programs in the US and internationally. In this role she is responsible for the planning, development, and effective implementation of all functions of ACEND, including standard setting and evaluation of dietetics education programs. She provides oversight of ACEND’s financial and human resources and plans and directs services to address dietetics education issues. Dr. Gregoire was formerly the Director of Food and Nutrition Services at Rush University Medical Center and Professor and Chair of Clinical Nutrition at Rush University. She is an active researcher and writer on foodservice management issues including sustainability and operational effectiveness. She has published more than 200 peer-reviewed articles and abstracts and authors the textbook Foodservice Organizations: A Managerial and Systems Approach.

Christine Hartney

Chris Hartney, MS, RDN, LDN, FAND is the Chair for the Accreditation Council for Education in Nutrition and Dietetics (ACEND). She has over 10 years of experience as a Program Reviewer for ACEND and previously served as the Dietetic Internship Program Representative on the ACEND Board. Chris is the Clinical Nutrition Manager and one of the Dietetic Internship Coordinators at Rush University Medical Center in Chicago, IL where she manages a team of 34 FTE and works as part of the dietetic internship leadership team to manage 32 interns. As an internship coordinator, Chris oversees the food systems management supervised practice experience and helps recruit and support interns throughout the internship program. Chris completed her BS at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and her dietetic internship and MS degree at Rush University Medical Center and Rush University. She has over 18 years of clinical experience in both inpatient and outpatient settings with a focus on oncology, neurocritical care, general neurology and general medicine patients. Her research interests include investigating issues with nutrition in stroke patients and quality improvement projects and she has been a part of a variety of research projects including inpatient diabetes education, knowledge of the National Dysphagia Diet, health literacy with diet education and food insecurity in hospitalized patients. Outside of involvement with ACEND, Chris has served as an expert panel member for the Registration Examination for Dietetic Technicians, Registered through the Commission on Dietetic Registration and Treasurer for the Illinois Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics.

Jennifer Tomesko, DCN, RD, CNSC

Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey

Dr. Jennifer Tomesko is an Assistant Professor and the Program Director for the Rutgers University School of Health Professions Master of Science in Clinical Nutrition Program, which is accredited as the first demonstration program under the Future Education Model Accreditation Standards for Graduate Degree Programs. She is a Registered Dietitian certified in nutrition support. She completed her Doctorate of Clinical Nutrition program from Rutgers University, School of Health Professions, her MS degree and dietetic internship at the Indiana University of Pennsylvania, and her BS degree from the University of Delaware. Her doctoral research focused on hypocaloric nutrition support of mechanically ventilated patients. Dr. Tomesko previously was employed as a clinical nutrition manager for Sodexo at St. Michael's Medical Center in Newark, NJ.

Riva Touger-Decker, PhD, RD, CDN, FADA

Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey

Dr. Touger-Decker is Associate Dean of Global Affairs, Professor and Chair of the Department of Nutritional Sciences and Professor at the Rutgers University School of Health Professions and Professor at the Rutgers School of Dental Medicine. She completed her PhD at New York University. She is a registered dietitian and is internationally recognized for her expertise and leadership in nutrition and oral health/dental education, nutrition focused physical exam, innovative approaches to nutrition and dietetics education and advanced practice nutrition and dietetics education. Her research has explored diet and orofacial pain, nutrition and tooth loss, nutrition and head and neck cancers, and nutrition focused physical examination practices of dietitians. Dr. Touger-Decker is the lead editor of Nutrition and Oral Medicine. She has authored multiple peer reviewed publications on nutrition topics and is on the editorial board of Topics in Clinical Nutrition and the Journal of the American Dental Association . She has been awarded both the American Dietetic Association Medallion Award and Excellence in Dietetic Education Award; the American Society for Clinical Nutrition Dannon Institute Award for Excellence in Medical/Dental Nutrition Education. She is also an elected Fellow of the New York Academy of Medicine.
