207. Refeeding Syndrome: Prevention and Treatment

In this session, presenters will identify the risk factors for refeeding syndrome and discuss how to assess patients to identify these risk factors. The speakers will present a decision tree to determine those patients at risk for refeeding syndrome and then describe how to address this risk to prevent refeeding syndrome. They will also provide clinical recommendations for the treatment of patients at risk for refeeding syndrome as well as those identified with refeeding syndrome, including a sample Power Plan proposed for implementation at Emory University Hospital.

Moira Faris, MPH, RDN, LD, CDE

Moira Faris is the Clinical Nutrition Manager at Emory University Hospital. She has been with Emory for over seven years. Prior to that, she worked as the Nutrition Manager at the DeKalb County WIC office and worked for many years as a clinical dietitian. She currently manages 17 dietitians serving a diverse acute inpatient population. She is currently on the Member Services Advisory Committee for the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics and has held offices in the Clinical Nutrition Management DPG. She has presented at poster sessions for FNCE and the Georgia Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics Annual Conference and Expo on malnutrition. She was a speaker at the Georgia Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics Annual Conference and Expo on nutrition and heart failure.

Christina Rollins, MBA MS RDN

Christina Rollins is a Registered Dietitian Nutritionist, Affiliate Vice President of Operations, Quality and Safety at Passavant Area Hospital and certified lean six sigma black belt. She earned her Bachelor of Science degree from Eastern Illinois University in Charleston, IL, followed by a Master of Science degree from Illinois State University in Normal, IL and Master of Business Administration degree from University of Illinois in Springfield, IL. Rollins has been the recipient of several grants, including funds to support burn and critical care research and the development and implementation of a clinical simulation lab to improve patient outcomes associated with feeding tube insertion at the bedside by registered dietitians and critical care registered nurses. She is a member of the Jacksonville Rotary Club, Illinois Women in Leadership, American College of Healthcare Executives, and is Chair-Elect of Dietitians in Nutrition Support, a dietetic practice group of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics. Rollins is the recipient of numerous awards including the 2018 Excellence in Management award by the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics.

Michelle Gooden, RDN-AP, LD

Michelle serves as Dietetic Internship Coordinator for Emory Hospitals Dietetic Internship and Clinical Dietitian at Emory University Hospital. She has worked as a clinical dietitian for over eight years and prior to that worked in school nutrition. Clinically, she is primarily responsible for the medical nutrition therapy associated with neurointensive care, neurosurgery, neuroscience, and neurology. In her time at Emory, Michelle has served as educator for dietetic interns, medical students, and other healthcare professionals. During her career, Michelle has been awarded Emerging Dietetic Leader for the Georgia Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics, Recognized Young Dietitian of the Year for the Greater Atlanta District of Georgia, and has received the Dietitian Officer Award from the United States Public Health Service. She has served as a speaker at the Georgia General Assembly and has presented for the Georgia Society for Parenteral and Enteral Nutrition, Georgia Conference for Renal Nutrition, and the Georgia Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics Annual Conference and Expo. In all her roles, Michelle is passionate about advancing the profession of dietetics through collaboration between medical disciplines and continuous quality improvement assessment.
