Motivating the Unmotivated Child (SC28)

This session is eligible for Pennsylvania Act 48 professional education hours.

This session will explore how to recognize the signs and causes of lack of motivation in children and provide a framework for decision-making about “next steps” in intervention. The presenter will discuss procedures for interviewing students to identify stages of motivation and use case examples to illustrate how to tailor treatment objectives to the motivational stage of an individual student.

Ellen M. Kelly, PhD, CCC-SLP, is an associate professor in the Department of Hearing and Speech Sciences and director of the Stuttering Foundation Program at Vanderbilt and executive director of Camp T.A.L.K.S. (Talking And Learning with Kids who Stutter) at Vanderbilt University Medical Center (VUMC). She evaluates and treats those who stutter of all ages and their families, conducts research with the Developmental Stuttering Project team at the VUMC, and teaches, supervises, presents, and publishes in the areas of stuttering and counseling.
