This pre-conference workshop will describe how speech-language pathologists can collaborate with other school-based staff and families to improve the functional communication abilities of students/clients across settings. The speaker will discuss planning, teaching, and implementing strategies to improve communicative independence for minimally verbal or nonverbal children.

Dawn Trotter, MSEd, CCC-SLP, has 20 years combined school-based experience as both an early childhood special educator and a speech-language pathologist working across grade levels and academic settings. Trotter currently serves as co-director of public policy for the Maryland Speech-Language-Hearing Association (MSHA) and is a member of the Howard County Public School System's Instructional Access Team. She collaborates closely with school teams and families in the evaluation, implementation, and provision of ongoing support services for students who require functional communication alternatives, including AAC. Trotter also provides professional learning opportunities for teachers, therapists, and graduate students, as well as training for families within the Baltimore/DC metro areas.
