The American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC) is piloting an innovative method of awarding CE credit to nurses using an outcome-based model. This model is designed to integrate a learner/team-directed educational approach that incorporates performance/quality improvement expectations into learning experiences to positively impact nursing practice, patient, and/or systems outcomes. The outcome-based model has five levels, beginning with articulation of knowledge and skills and progressing through application of knowledge and skills, demonstration of knowledge and skills in an educational setting, integration of knowledge and skills into practice, and impact on practice, patient and/or system outcomes. Professional practice gaps serve as the guide for determining desired outcomes of each learning experience. This presentation will review this innovative model, and describe lessons learned that impact accreditors, providers of CE, and individual learners.

Jennifer Graebe has a professional nursing career spanning 20 years and has a wealth of education and clinical experience. Jennifer received master of nursing in leadership and health systems management from Drexel University, her baccalaureate degree in nursing from Villanova University; and a certificate in healthcare management, accounting and economics from Johns Hopkins University. Jennifer holds the ANCC Nurse Executive Advanced – Board Certification. In August of 2015, Jennifer joined the American Nurses Enterprise in their subsidiary the American Nurses Credentialing Center as the Senior Operations Manager of Primary and Joint Accreditation. In October of 2017, Jennifer was promoted to role of Director of Primary and Joint Accreditation. In this role Jennifer is responsible for the daily operations of over 450 accredited organizations that provide and/or approve continuing nursing education and interprofessional continuing education. Prior to her role at the ANCC, Jennifer has held roles in leadership at MedStar Georgetown University Hospital as the Clinical Educator in the Emergency Department (ED) at MedStar Georgetown University Hospital and more recently as the Clinical Manager. While at MGUH, Jennifer was recognized as Nurse Leader of the Year (2014) and Nurse of the Year in Nursing Education (2010). Jennifer also holds instructor certificates in basic and advanced cardiac life support and has presented at conferences for IAFN and ANPD. Jennifer has experience in the provision of IPCE in leadership and human trafficking. Until recently, Jennifer continued to work with patients clinically in the Emergency Department and teach courses on High Reliability Organizations and Medication Safety.

Robert G Hess, Jr, PhD, RN, FAAN, recently transitioned into the role of Executive Vice President, Chief Clinical Executive, for OnCourse Learning, Healthcare, which publishes Nurse.com (formerly Nursing Spectrum and Nurseweek) and Continuingeducation.com. In the 25 years before this new role, he was the Executive Vice President, Education Programs & Credentialing, leading the largest CE providerships in the world for nurses and dietitians, as well as 22 additional health professions, including physicians and pharmacists. In 2016, he granted four million CE contact hours through more than 3,000 currently active educational activities in all modes of delivery. The interprofessional team he left behind coordinates the development of educational activities with thousands of authors and reviewers. Dr. Hess is also the career blogger for Nurse.com.

Dr. Hess is the Founder & CEO of the Forum for Shared Governance and webmaster for www.sharedgovernance.org. He is the author of the only instruments for measuring governance in healthcare organizations, used globally in 300 healthcare systems, and coauthor of a new instrument, Council Health, which measures shared governance councils’ effectiveness. He is coauthor of the only current book on implementing shared governance and the world’s leading researcher on shared governance.

Dr. Hess is the past Vice Chair of the ANCC’s Commission on Accreditation and a past Director of the American Association for Men in Nursing. Its former Chair, he is Advisor to the Development Committee (personal fundraising) of the American Academy of Nursing, and a current Trustee for the Foundation of the National Student Nurses Association.

Chris Schumacher, MS, MSN, RN-BC is a certified Professional Nurse Development Practitioner who has been actively engaged in the profession of nursing for over 25 years. For over 15 years, her work has focused on the development of the nurse in both the academic and practice settings. Chris has participated in the planning, development, implementation, and evaluation of multiple educational activities focused on achieving quality patient outcomes.
In her current role, Chris serves as the lead nurse planner for the Versant Continuing Education Provider Unit and has been actively involved in the American Nurse Credentialing Center’s "CE Without Time as a Metric" pilot project since its inception. In addition, she manages education and curriculum for the Versant® transition-to-practice programs.
Chris has been actively involved in nursing at the local, state, and national levels by serving in various roles that include being a member of the Kansas Nursing Education and Practice Commission, a DAISY Award Scholarship Reviewer, Appraiser for the American Nurse Credentialing Center Practice Transition Accreditation Program, and an active member of the Association for Nursing Professional Development. In addition to contributing to several published articles in peer-reviewed nursing journals, Chris has co-authored a chapter in the recently published book "Leadership in Nursing Professional Development: An Organizational & System Focus".
