Physician and Patient Beliefs about Patient Satisfaction: Aligned or Discordant?

Session Description
Many studies have confirmed that patient satisfaction with their provider and healthcare experience plays an important role in patient engagement and health outcomes. As a result, patient satisfaction has been part of the CMS Hospital Value-based Purchasing Program and private payer initiative since the passage of the 2010 Affordable Care Act and has been tied to reimbursement since 2012. Despite much criticism of the measurement methodology, patient satisfaction will continue to influence the perception of quality of care and provider reimbursement as we evolve from a volume to value-based payment system.

During this session, the presenters will share the results of a unique 2016 study conducted to measure, compare and contrast patient and physician perspectives on the importance of patient satisfaction in healthcare delivery. WebMD.com site users were surveyed about the importance and impact of patient satisfaction on patient engagement and the ability of the patient to reach their healthcare goals. Attributes that determine a patient’s satisfaction with their provider and healthcare experience were also assessed. Medscape Education conducted a parallel physician member survey to measure physician beliefs about the impact that patient satisfaction has on outcomes of care and which attributes physician’s believe and perceive most impact a patient’s satisfaction with their provider. Statistical analyses were applied to determine alignment or discordance in the responses between physicians and patients.

The study uncovered some surprising and statistically significant differences between patient and physician beliefs regarding the importance and impact of patient satisfaction on patient engagement and outcomes; and regarding which provider attributes are most important to patients.

The session will elaborate on the findings with respect to points of alignment and disparities between patient and physician beliefs about what is most important to patients. Based on the learnings from the analysis of survey results, key success factors will be identified for developing educational activities for healthcare providers and patients that drive greater patient and provider engagement in shared decision making, optimize outcomes, and increase the quality of care. Additionally, prevalent myths, perceptions, and barriers associated with drivers of patient satisfaction will be highlighted.

Dr. DeMaria is currently the Senior Vice President at Medscape Education, overseeing all operational aspects of the continuing education division of Medscape/WebMD, including the CME, Global and Government operations. Dr. DeMaria has spent the past 14 years working in clinical research, marketing and medical affairs in the pharmaceutical industry. He has a B.S. in Biology from the University of Notre Dame, a M.S. in Biological and a PhD in Neuroendocrinology from Florida State University. During his time in graduate and post-doctoral studies at the University of Pennsylvania, Dr. DeMaria published 12 peer-reviewed scientific papers. During his time in the pharmaceutical industry, Dr. DeMaria worked on clinical trials for pediatric vaccines, as well as the oversight of cardiovascular and oncology brands from both a marketing and medical affairs perspective. More recently Dr. DeMaria earned his MBA from the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill’s Kenan-Flagler Business school with a designation in Leadership.
