Session Description
The European Society of Cardiology represents over 80,000 cardiology professionals from 56 National Cardiac Societies across Europe. The ESC has been recently reviewing its educational strategy to evolve its current position and become recognised in the area of continuing professional development and Performance Improvement. To better understand how they should evolve their offering and respond to the needs of their 56 National Cardiac Societies members, the ESC has been conducting a large organisational Needs Assessment to identify current perceived and unperceived needs of their members, and the underlying causalities of those needs, using a mixed-methods approach (combining qualitative semi-structured interviews, focus groups and quantitative online surveys). Two topic-specific needs assessment conducted by the ESC in collaboration with an independent performance improvement research organization will also be presented as cases.

In this presentation, the benefits of deploying organizational needs assessment and topic specific needs assessment rather than regular market research will be discussed and the rationale for adopting an approach that is not organization-driven but rather puts the clinical reality of its members at the center will be explained.

Take Home for Educators and Educational Researchers Involved in the Design and Deployment of Needs Assessment: This session will allow them to gain understanding on how these needs assessment can be used to support professional organisations and specialty societies in their efforts to contribute to improve patient care through providing need-based solutions to their members.

Take Home for Stakeholders in Professional Organisations: This presentation will address needs assessment from an angle that is directly relevant to their reality and demonstrate how these needs assessment can be used to inform activities, beyond education, so that professional societies really become health solution partners in their field.
