Session Description
Around the world, the pharmaceutical industry provides educational activities to healthcare professionals with the intent to improve the health of patients living with serious disease. This provision of education can run from simply providing financial support to full engagement with content development and faculty delivery.

In Europe, there are two basic forms of medical education delivery from industry. The first is educational content developed and produced internally, such as a stand alone CME meeting or satellite symposium. Faculty are engaged and trained to deliver the content. Increasingly, this in-house education is moving towards novel, digital initiatives such as webinars, apps, and other online education programs. Secondly, industry is increasingly supporting independent education via grants and sponsorships. Independent third parties submit proposals for education to meet educational needs, with the trend towards digital engagement.

The Global Alliance for Medical Education (GAME) has an Industry focused Special Interest Group, called the International Pharmaceutical Alliance for Continuing Medical Education (iPACME), representing approximately 15 separate pharmaceutical companies. In 2016, it was engaged by the EFPIA (European Federation of Pharmaceutical Industry and Associations) to define, understand and engage key stakeholders in continuing medical education in Europe. Utilizing a publication defining the quality of medical education in Europe, and interviewing key stakeholders, the group has identified a number of trends in the field.

The trends identified include 1) the decline for supporting the traditional live congress, 2) new audiences for education such as patients and payers, 3) increased quality of medical education events, 4) an increased use of independent 3rd party education providers, and 5) the rise of digital engagement.

The use of technology to enhance education is utilized to varying degrees around the world. Webinars are popular in Latin America. Streaming technology provides a much wider learner audience across India. In Europe, the strategic focus on quality education will not change, but tactics around digital engagement, such as apps, patient simulation, AI, and other online education, will mature. While some companies are embracing the new focus on digital, others are waiting to see what happens., as utilization of these technologies is not inexpensive. We will provide concrete examples of the current use of technology in CME, and with the increased reach of digital media, provide some of the outcomes that demonstrate the power to educate for a fairly inexpensive cost per learner.

Dr. Dale Kummerle is a Pharmacist and is currently the Department Lead for Bristol-Myers Squibb (BMS) Independent Medical Education. He has been involved in education his entire career, from his time as a NovaSoutheastern University Assistant Professor, to his 14 years in educating Healthcare professionals and Patients as a BMS Medical Science Liaison. He has 4 years of international business experience in Europe and the Middle East, building and managing a team of medical scientists across 14 countries. Dale’s lifelong passion for learning and teaching has provided him with opportunities to lecture internationally, including North America, Europe, China, and Japan. He has been invited to speak at conferences across the globe, including presentations at CBI, EU CME Forum, Association of Medical Education in Europe (AMEE), Asia-Pacific Medical Education Congress (APMEC), the Alliance for Continuing Education of Healthcare Professionals and the Global Alliance for Medical Education conferences.

During Dale's career, he has enjoyed volunteering for various professional associations, including a national position with the American Pharmaceutical Association, and Committee participation with the Florida Pharmacists Association. He was President of the Broward County Pharmacists Association (1997 – 1998), and now leads the Global Alliance for Medical Education as it’s current president (2017 – 2018).

Thomas Kellner MD
He has held various national and international positions at MSD and headed univadis, a leading global communication and education platform for healthcare professionals. Kellner served as general manager at an education consultancy in Europe. He is currently heading global medical education & learning at UCB Biosiences.
He serves as a board member of the European Journal of CME, Global Alliance for Medical Education, a member of the international Pharmaceutical Alliance for CME (iPACME), a co-lead of the medical education working group of EFPIA and member of the IFPMA medical education working group.
Kellner contributed to publications and conferences on the subject of medical education, educational sciences and performance improvement.
