Session Description
A session directed toward women aspiring to or currently holding leadership positions was conducted at both the Alliance 2016 and 2017 Annual Conferences. Each session was characterized by small group table discussions, with consequent reporting out to the large group. As part of the 2017 discussion, many early and mid-career  participants voiced a lack of confidence in asserting their own competence in “flying their flag” when seeking promotions, pay increases, and other steps on a career journey. There was near unanimous support for a 2018 workshop to rehearse and build skill in representing oneself for these purposes.

This workshop will present information to enhance participant knowledge in professional self-assertion, model effective and ineffective approaches to such assertion, then implement role-play exercises to provide deliberative practice and feedback in these skills for participants. The three listed faculty members will design and participate in the delivery of the workshop, but a broader group of experienced leaders, who participated in the 2016 and 2017 women and leadership sessions, will be enlisted to support the skill building exercises, with the intent that these same persons be matched as follow-up mentors to those participants who would choose to have such support. The 2016 and 2017 sessions were targeted toward a female audience, but the intent of this workshop is to be inclusive of anyone who wishes to improve these skills, although it is often women who feel most in need of rehearsal in learning to “fly their own flags.” The take-home lesson is for the learning lab participants to apply their new skills to the specific areas for back-home improvement they have identified, and use their matched mentor for continuing support, as necessary.

Alli Unger serves as the Associate Director in the professional development department at the American Society of Addiction Medicine, a medical society representing over 5000 medical professionals in the field of addiction medicine. She graduated in 2012 from St. Mary's College of MD with a deree in Psychology and is currently celebrating 1,651 days at ASAM as of January 21, 2018! She currently serves as the staff lead for several ASAM offerings and initiatives including The ASAM Fundamentals of Addiction Medicine, an innovative new curriculum designed for providers who were not offered training on addiction during residency or medical school. She appreciates all the knowledge (both accidental and intentional) she has obtained while overcoming challenges that come with working in a small but mighty society. Alli is passionate about bringing addiction medicine to the forefront and enjoys the opportunity to explore new ways to design and deliver medical education. In her free time Alli is an avid foodie, lover of roller coasters (not at the same time), and regular day-dreamer of the next travel adventure.

Molly Scarlett Mazuk

Molly S. Mazuk is a Maryland native who came into the field of continuing medical education by accident (happy accident). Molly has been planning and developing continuing medical education since arriving as a bright-eyed intern at the American Society of Addiction Medicine (ASAM) in 2013. She still works (and occasionally plays) at ASAM and focuses primarily on clinician education programs around prescription opioids and the overlap between pain and addiction. She loves finding new ways to teach the same material and Reese’s peanut butter cups, in that order.
Molly is a 2012 graduate of St. Mary’s College of Maryland. When not at work, Molly can be found at a spin class or reading a good book.
