It’s perhaps in the mission statement of most of the healthcare education providers. It’s the holy grail for continuing education in the Health Professions. It’s probably the most often discussed topic in meetings. Yet achieving it remains a tall task for most providers. The reasons could be plenty, but it still remains an elusive dream. The dream to reach the highest level of Moore’s CME framework. Yes, we are talking about higher level outcomes measurement! Outcomes such as performance, patient health, and community health. In this case study session led by planners and educators, the participants will work in groups to review multiple outcomes measurement case scenarios in the academic healthcare, nursing, and medical specialty society settings and devise practical strategies to address the challenges.
As a panel representing diverse provider backgrounds, we understand that measuring high-level outcomes is dependent on a wide range of internal and external factors. Certain factors are unique to the provider setting. However, it is interesting to note that there are some common challenges that all providers face regardless of their provider setting. For example, how do we encourage learners to complete a follow-up post-test or survey 30/60/90/120 days after course completion? What educational interventions could we use to measure learner competence?
The participants will be divided into working groups where each group will be presented with case scenarios from the providers' educational settings. In an effort to ensure case studies comprise a wide range of provider settings, the faculty panel has educators from the medical specialty association, home health care provider, academic healthcare, and technology sectors. Each working group will be presented with a case description and a questionnaire. The group will be tasked with reviewing the case, identifying the challenges and devising practical solutions to improve the outcomes measurement process and techniques. The group will be asked to present the findings to the entire audience followed by a panel/group discussion to review the solutions.
As session takeaways, all participants will be provided with toolkits which include case studies, questionnaires, solutions discussed by other group members and best practices from the faculty panel.
- Describe common challenges faced in higher level outcomes measurement
- Examine and analyze motivational factors for learners to complete follow-up assessments or surveys
- Critically analyze the strategies presented in the case study review discussions and take-away documents for applicability in their educational settings
