Session Description
The ongoing focus on improving patient safety and outcomes has led to development of a host of new and emerging healthcare guidelines and best practices, yet their implementation in the clinical setting is often suboptimal. [1] Virtual patient simulation (VPS) is one such option at the forefront of providing clinicians evidenced-based education in a consequence-free environment. In its most practical form, VPS aims to mimic actual patient care encounters, offering learners the opportunity to make clinical decisions all based on the specific presentation of the patient. As learners progress through VPS, they are presented with feedback related to their decisions, similar to the “grand rounds approach” utilized for medical students and new residents. In addition, learners are able gain experiences with situations that arise only rarely in their own practices and the game-like learning experience may enhance retention of information.

This session will provide session participants with hands-on experience with the VPS environment to familiarize them with its capabilities. Participants will then break into smaller groups to identify and discuss the aspects of VPS that they believe contribute to the effectiveness of the VPS platform. Next, the group will come back together to discuss the identified elements and brainstorm ways to translate those elements into additional learning modalities. Examples of such translation will be shared with participants.
