Session Description
With the recent shift toward quality-based care, two-way physician-patient communication and shared decision-making (SDM) are increasingly recognized as having positive impacts on patient satisfaction and outcomes. Despite this, the ability of patients and care partners to comprehend online health-relevant information is not often considered in the development of patient educational materials. For SDM to occur, patients must feel capable and confident in discussing their symptoms, beliefs, treatment goals, and preferences with their providers. Therefore, patient and care partner education designed to help learners manage both acute and chronic conditions needs to empower, engage and inform so that the patient is able to have a meaningful dialogue with their healthcare provider. The importance of these developments is reflected in the inclusion of patient education and SDM as integral components of value-based care guidelines. However, the quality of patient education materials do not often meet these expectations, and the resulting outcomes do not demonstrate the desired impact. Using a didactic and interactive approach, this session will examine the journey toward improvement of patient care by discussing limitations and successes in patient educational design and how the field needs to evolve in order to meet the needs of patients.
