Session Description
CE Providers typically collect evaluation feedback from learners in conjunction with their participation in specific activities, but this leaves a large gap in our knowledge of how healthcare professionals manage their learning and identify educational opportunities between activities.  To begin addressing this gap, the American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO) piloted a longitudinal learning cohort in 2015-2016 representing ASCO’s target audience and membership.  The purpose of the group was to engage with ASCO members on a continuous basis (10 months) to obtain feedback on ASCO’s educational activities and resources as well as external sources used to address learning needs.  ASCO also tasked this group with exploring strategies to support learning, such as activity evaluations and content searching, to identify opportunities for improvement.  ASCO’s CME Subcommittee anticipated that this cohort would identify potential directions to explore further regarding the design and delivery of continuing education activities, and would provide insights on how oncology healthcare professionals from diverse background managed their learning over time. Ultimately, ASCO’s CME Subcommittee sought to evaluate the degree to which the Society was meeting its educational mission and identify opportunities to improve engagement in lifelong learning and, through education, have a greater impact on the care of patients with cancer.

Attendees participating in this session will learn more about how this pilot project was designed and implemented, initial themes and outcomes from data analysis, and potential next steps for the project.  Attendees will be able to take home strategies to explore how this innovative approach to educational research could potentially be adapted for implementation regardless of provider type or target audience.
