Session Description
What would you do? Your patient who is suffering from chronic pain is sitting across from you, and you need to discuss his opioid prescription. This is the scenario faced by primary care and specialty clinicians across the country in the face of a national opioid morbidity and mortality crisis. In this session, you will take on the role of your learners, and experience the use of clinician-patient interaction videos as triggers for teaching communications skills.
Through an interactive, experiential demonstration of the use of video vignettes, skills practice, and guided discussion, this session will offer ‘hands on’ experience in the use of a facilitated workshop employing trigger videos as an educational strategy.
SCOPE of Pain: Safe and Competent Opioid Prescribing Education, designed to educate clinicians on safer opioid prescribing practices, was launched in 2013 as part of the FDA’s Risk Evaluation and Mitigation Strategy for extended-release/long acting opioids has trained over 34,000 clinicians around the country. Video vignettes are incorporated in live meetings to enhance FDA-compliant essential content, and to contextualize the complex communications that clinicians must have with patients on chronic opioid therapy. They are also designed for use by non-experts and experts to extend the online SCOPE of Pain program nationally, by providing content for shorter in-person pre-clinic conferences, where clinicians can “practice” their communications skills.
Learning Objectives:
- Upon completion, participant will be able to appropriately incorporate the use of trigger videos into their educational activities
- Upon completion, participant will be able to implement effective communication skills strategies
