Session Description
This session will address this year’s theme, Patient Outcomes: Our Journey to Improving Patient Care, by examining the critical role that shared decision making plays in the improvement of patient care and outcomes. In addition, it will address how members of the CME/CE community can embrace shared decision-making methodologies as an integral part of educational design.

Traditional knowledge- and competency-based models of CME/CE can be effective, yet insufficient. More often than not, inclusion of patient education in comprehensive program design is overlooked or provided as an add-on to provider programs. Additionally, insights gained from patient education programs have little influence on the content of CME/CE activities. Interestingly, as patient-centered healthcare models and shared decision-making principles are receiving increased national attention, the patient voice is largely absent in the CME/CE enterprise.

Shared decision making is a collaborative process that encourages patients and providers to make disease management decisions together through an understanding of the most current clinical evidence and the patient’s lifestyle and preferences. Research has shown that shared decision-making approaches are highly effective in the clinical setting and that increasing numbers of healthcare systems are adopting this model of care. Thus, it is incumbent upon CME/CE professionals to design education that mirrors these approaches and supports clinicians’ integration of shared decision making into everyday practice. Additionally, using a comprehensive educational model that includes the patient and the provider often uncovers gaps that exist between the perspectives of each group—gaps that may have been previously unknown or would have been more difficult to identify through standalone activities.

This session will begin with a dialogue among CME/CE providers, associations, medical societies, and other interested participants about the role that the patient voice has played in the majority of provider-focused educational initiatives thus far. We will then provide evidence and reasoning regarding the important role that patient insights can and should play in program design and how inclusion of these insights can help learners cultivate an environment of shared decision making within their practice and improve patient outcomes.

Finally, a variety of case studies outlining shared decision-making educational models, that have been used by members of the panel, will be presented. Case-study discussions will include overviews of the practice gaps that were identified, approach to educational design, involvement of collaborators, outcomes of the initiatives, and lessons learned. Participants can expect to leave this session armed with an increased understanding of the importance of incorporating the patient voice in provider education and strategies for crafting their educational offerings from a shared decision-making perspective.
