Session Description
Data gathered from medical education professionals lists lack of data numeracy as a quantifiable barrier to developing robust needs assessments, pre- and post-activity outcomes questions and analyses, as well as meaningful metrics for evaluation of learning frameworks and lifetime learning opportunities. Continuing Medical Education is uniquely positioned to partner and guide physicians from empiric therapy recommendations to point of care patient-centered care. The complexity of alternative payment models, electronic medical record integration, social determinants of health and evolving policy recommendations both in Medicare and Medicaid as well as commercial models has created a data void to inform not only improved patient outcomes but also the health of our communities.

Participants will learn about a variety of data sources and tools available for informing care in the modern healthcare ecosystem. How to formulate a 360 degree healthcare question relevant for decision making and what solutions work best in each scenario. When should we look to health economics and outcomes research? What are the pros and cons of randomized controlled studies, observational studies, and HEOR? 

The expanded context of policy both upstream and downstream from disease, an evolving clinical landscape with advanced genomic studies, food policy, and a dynamic regulatory framework will benefit from a system thinking approach to data and medical education.

It would be appropriate to define the precise application of system's thinking as applied to the development of this educational session. As defined by Arnold and Wade "Systems thinking is a set of synergistic analytic skills used to improve the capability of identifying and understanding systems, predicting their behaviors, and devising modifications to them to produce desired effects. These skills work together as a system."

In a simplified lexicon, I applied systems thinking to the complexity of healthcare by attempting to incorporate multiple perspectives (payer, patient, provider, government, industry...) and use data to demonstrate inter- and intrarelationships and dependencies--we need to look at the complex problem and use data to reliably predict the impact of change to the system. What can data illuminate about the role of biosimilars, biologics, novel drugs, and genetic variants? Let's find out...

Stephen Chavez has spent more than 20 years working to improve patient health outcomes through physician engagement and continuing medical education (CME) programs. He believes in the power of collaboration to achieve mission-driven results. In 2016, Stephen co-founded Health Advocacy Partners (HAP) with Catherine Coman to help advocacy groups engage their members, grow their audience and measure their overall impact through patient education, digital health strategies, and patient-reported data collection and analysis. In his role at HAP, Stephen works with patient advocacy clients to expand their physician programming and reporting, shared decision-making tools and resources, and grant development processes.

Prior to co-founding Health Advocacy Partners, Stephen was vice president of strategic alliances at North American Center for Continuing Medical Education, where he developed large-scale collaboratives that supported the health outcomes mission of partnering organizations. Stephen has a Bachelor, Business Administration from the University of Notre Dame. He lives outside of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania with his wife where he spends time driving his children around.
