Session Description
Although healthcare education professionals grasp the importance of the patient voice, it is challenging, at times, to include the patient in CE activities. This video "documentary short" is a physician's narrative account of one of his earliest patients, who shaped the way he practiced medicine and interacted with families. The 40 minute video, "Casey's Legacy"  (name changed) allows the physician, Dr. Rick Boyte, Schwartz Center 2014 Compassionate Caregiver of the Year, to use storytelling and case presentation to convey the importance of clear communication with patients and patient families. Learners will be captivated by this physician's story and his use of an actual case to deliver education regarding the four principles of ethics and how they relate to patient interaction. "Casey's Legacy" is a wonderful example of how patients impact the lives of providers and can be educators in their own right. While there may not be a red carpet included in this session, learners are invited to provide reactions to the movie and discuss in small and large groups after viewing. The innovative educational module has been used for CME, CNE, and for undergraduate medical education.
