This session will review the timely and controversial topic of ultrasound transducer disinfection, which is a commonly used patient care tool to place vascular access devices. The use of ultrasound in placing vascular access devices, both peripheral and central, has been a lifesaving tool to improving vascular access, decreasing costs, and improving the overall patient experience across the continuum of care. Vascular Access Specialists must be knowledgeable about the current evidence-based practices for disinfection of medical devices and also apply a pragmatic approach to disinfection of ultrasound transducers while following the manufacturer's instructions for use. This session will also review a risk-based approach to disinfection of medical devices, and arm vascular access specialists with a sample policy and procedure to tackle this important task.

Dr. Hudson Garrett currently serves as an Adjunct Assistant Professor of Medicine in the Division of Infectious Diseases at the University of Louisville School of Medicine and the Presidential Advisor of the Vascular Access Certification Corporation Board of Directors. He has completed the Johns Hopkins Fellows Program in Hospital Epidemiology and Infection Control and the CDC Fundamentals of Healthcare Epidemiology program. Dr. Garrett serves He was recognized as a "Who’s Who in Infection Prevention" by Infection Control Magazine. Dr. Garrett recently served as the subject matter expert for the Medscape CME Series sponsored by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Dr. Garrett's passion is fostering the advancement of evidence-based practices for infection prevention and control and vascular access across interprofessional boundaries globally. He is a Distinguished Fellow and Practitioner in the National Academies of Practice.

Ruth M. Carrico PhD DNP APRN FNP-C FSHEA CIC is a Professor and Family Nurse Practitioner with the University of Louisville School Medicine, Division of Infectious Diseases, and is the founding Associate Director of the School of Medicine Global Health Initiative. Dr. Carrico has received training specific for healthcare epidemiology at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in conjunction with the Rollins School of Public Health at Emory University in Atlanta and the Society for Healthcare Epidemiology of America (SHEA). As part of her work as an infection preventionist, Dr. Carrico has worked with acute care hospitals, long term care facilities, outpatient surgery centers and clinics, and physician and dental offices. She has published more than 100 articles, book chapters and books relevant to infection prevention and control and continues to focus her research activities in the same arena.

Judy is a Vascular Access Specialist from San Diego. Judy joined AVA in early 2018 as the Director of Clinical Education. Judy’s professional experience includes work as a registered nurse in oncology, telemetry, emergency, outpatient surgery, telemedicine nursing, and vascular access. In 2012, she earned her MSN with an emphasis on nursing education from Grand Canyon University. She is one of the founding members and president of the San Diego Vascular Access Network (SANVAN). Judy has been involved at many levels within AVA. She served three years as a member and chair-elect for AVA’s conference development team (Dteam), two years as a Director at Large on the AVA Board of Directors, and the past two years as president-elect and president.
