Robert M. Cooney is an Infection Preventionist and the Infection Control Officer for UNC Rex Healthcare in Raleigh, North Carolina. Robert received his Master’s in Public Health from the University of New England, Masters in Entrepreneurship from Western Carolina University, and his Bachelors in Nursing from the University of Central Florida. He is board certified in Infection Prevention and Control and has recently completed a 3 year term as a Board Member for the North Carolina APIC Chapter. His main research interests involve preventing health associated infections of all types and outbreak control.

Dr. Peggy Kalowes, RN, PhD, CNS, FAHA, Director of Nursing Research and Innovation at MemorialCare, Long Beach Medical Center (LBMC) and Miller Children’s & Women’s Hospital Long Beach (MCWHLB). Dr. Kalowes received her Doctorate of Philosophy in Nursing, at University of San Diego, 2007. She established the Center for Nursing Research and Innovation, where nurses at all levels of practice, can seek support to conduct research or evidence-based practice (EBP) improvement projects. She oversees >40 nursing research and interdisciplinary studies.

Dr. Kalowes’ research includes improving patient outcomes with infections, and critical/chronic illness, along with EOL/palliative care. Her research studies also focus on projects that are centered on improving patient/family and nurse satisfaction, as well as improvement initiatives around the various nursing sensitive indicators. For example, recently CLABSIs were reduced at MemorialCare LBM by 66% through the conduct of new product trial, the transformed CLABSI prevention, to reach and sustain a ‘zero’ zone in the number of CLABSIs.

She is also an internationally recognized researcher, particularly in skin and pressure injuries, and has conducted numerous RCTs on pressure injury (PI) prevention strategies. A nationally recognized Pressure Injury Prevention Model© evolved out of this work and helped guide LBMC/MCWHLB to achieve/sustain ‘zero’ zone pressure injuries for the past 4 years. This work resulted in two publications in peer review journals; and the receipt of the ‘Sustaining Excellence’ awards from CALNOC (Collaborative Alliance for Nursing Outcomes), a State of California organization and national registry, for three years consecutively.

Dr. Kalowes is well published and has spoken at many professional organizations, nationally and internationally presenting her research, as well as volunteering her time among these associations.
