Peds. Pre-Conference Workshop Attendees: Paving the Way with Early Detection Technology for PIVIE Harm Reduction

Infiltration and extravasation are common peripheral IV complications in pediatric patients. A recent study found that more than 50 percent of the IVs for neonates admitted to a NICU developed complications with 67 percent of those complications caused by infiltration. Hourly IV site assessments are crucial for detecting early symptoms of infiltration however, challenges exist.

Over lunch, panelists from the VAT and PICU units at Cincinnati Children’s Hospital and Medical Center, will discuss a quality improvement project including technology providing continuous monitoring of peripheral IVs to recognize infiltration/extravasation events (PIVIEs) early. This panel presentation will review phases of a first-of-its-type project to reduce serious harm caused by these events. With methodical and successful implementation, this team is paving the way for a new standard of care reducing harm from this hospital-acquired condition (HAC).

Marilyn Bowers, consultant, ivWatch, was one of the early employees at ivWatch and has held responsibilities in various areas of the company such as recruiting investors, meeting with medical device manufacturers and assisting with the development of the ivWatch system. She also conducted clinical studies at Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center, which were an instrumental component for obtaining pediatric FDA clearance, to later on implement the system in the hospital. Marilyn has also traveled across the country to assist institutions during their evaluations and sales processes.

Sylvia Rineair has 35 years as pediatric nurse at Cincinnati Children's. She has been the Clinical Director of the Vascular Access Team since 2007. Sylvia completed her VA-BC in 2011. She has provided local and national presentations related to vascular access. Sylvia has led peripheral intravenous (PIV) extravasation reduction activities at Cincinnati Children's, including the development of a bundle for assessing PIV sites and an extravasation scale to more accurately measure injury related to PIV therapy. She is currently a subject matter expert for the PIV Infiltration Extravasation Pioneer group for the national Solutions for Patient Safety group.

Lindsay Cipriani MSN, RN, M. Ed., Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center, Education Specialist, has been in the Pediatric ICU at Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center for more than eight years. She’s been in her current role as an education specialist for three and half years and an ICU nurse for the past 11.5 years. She now co-lead the PIVIE HAC (Hospital Acquired Condition) team for the PICU to decrease serious harm to this vulnerable patients population.
