The Neonatal and Pediatric Ultrasound Guided PICC Insertion Class has been designed specifically for clinicians with excellent PIV insertion skills wanting to venture further into the art of PICC placements within the dynamic realm of neonates and pediatrics. The clinicians will be given the optimal opportunity to develop new skills by; utilizing the modified seldinger technique (MST), traditional PICC insertion technique, and optimizing vessel visualization by integrating ultrasonic guidance.
This class is highly energetic and interactive! Attendees will be placed in groups with a designated instructor and will be given the opportunity to return demonstrate skills and receive personalized feedback within the following categories: vasculature assessment, insertion techniques and complete procedural sterile setup. There will be a review of indications, troubleshooting, and possible complications that can arise during ultrasound guided PICC insertions. The goals of this class are geared towards increasing the clinician’s procedural technique, self-awareness, skills, and self-confidence. All registered attendees will be required to review the provided didactic materials prior to attending the class and complete the online test that will be provided after registration has been completed. Review is highly encouraged as this will make the class experience more beneficial for all attendees.

She has been a nurse for 34 years. Of those 34 years, 28 years has been vascular access with a primary focus in pediatric vascular access.
She has been an active member of AVA for over 20 years and an active member of PediSIG for 5 years.
She started a business in South Florida with another nurse in 1993 which focused on vascular access which included PICC insertions and education. She moved to Atlanta in 1996 and went to work for Children’s Health Care of Atlanta to establish a PICC program. She has been part of the Vascular Access Team at CHOA for 23 years. She currently works full time for Cook Medical as a Clinical Specialist in Vascular Access.

Alicia Lue has been a nurse for 24 years. Alicia currently holds a position as one of the senior vascular access specialists at Nicklaus Children’s Hospital, for the past 17 years. Alicia is also a Clinical Nurse Educator for Genentech. Alicia’s accomplishments are as follows: Obtained National certification in the field of vascular access. Has had the privilege to speak at AVA, Flavan, and Pedivan. Is well known as being an advocate and nurse educator of vascular access. Alicia was one of the authors who helped to create the Peripheral IV Care and Maintenance MChex Course through the Children’s Hospital Association. Alicia is a proud member of AVA’s D-Team for the past 2 years.

Matthew has had the privilege of sharing his vision for vascular access speaking throughout the US, Canada, Latin America and as the Keynote Speaker at the 28th Annual Association for Vascular Access National Meeting.

Dr. Janice McDaniel is a Pediatric Interventional Radiologist at Akron Children's Hospital in Ohio. She attended medical school at the University of Cincinnati and completed radiology residency at the University Hospital in Cincinnati, followed by two fellowships in both Pediatric Radiology and Pediatric Interventional Radiology at Cincinnati Children's Hospital. She relocated to Akron after finishing medical training to start a pediatric interventional radiology program and is the only pediatric interventional radiologist in Northeast Ohio. She also serves as the Division Director of Interventional Radiology and the Medical Director of the Vascular Access Team. In addition, she is on staff at Cleveland Clinic Akron General Hospital. She is Board Certified in Pediatric Radiology and received her VA-BC certification in June 2016, currently serving as question reviewer for the Vascular Access Certification Exam.

Holly graduated from Penn State in 1975 and worked in Labor and Delivery and IV Therapy before spending 25 years in a Level 3 NICU, and the last 15 years in Pediatric and Neonatal Vascular Access. She started and developed the Vascular Access Team at Wolfson Children's Hospital in Jacksonville, FL where she is the Assistant Nurse Manager of the team that places all PICCs as well as ultrasound guided PIVs, and peripheral arterial lines. Holly has presented several times at AVA and teaches pediatric and neonatal PICC insertion.

Sam placed her first PICC in 2003 and has been a passionate vascular access nurse ever since. She developed and coordinated the Pediatric PICC team at UCLA, and has experience on the IV/PICC team at Los Angeles Children’s, Scottsdale Healthcare’s PICC Service, and most recently Infusion Therapy at Mayo Clinic Rochester where she developed their pediatirc PICC team. Currently she works for Teleflex, Arrow as a Regional Clinical Education Manager in their vascular division managing and providing education related to vascular access throughout the central region of the United States.

Patty Stasinowsky has been a nurse for 33 years. She is vascular access board certified and is taking classes towards obtaining her Master's degree in nursing education. She is a member of the PediSig, a member of the nominating committee and a member of MEVAN, the Maine Vascular Access Network. She began her career in oncology which is where her passion for vascular access began. For the past 9 years she has been working for the the Vascular Access Team at Maine Medical Center in Portland Maine where she places PICC's, midlines and US guided PIV's in adult and pediatric patients. She teaches a 4 hour vascular access class twice a month to all newly hired nurses. In addition she teaches at local long term care facilities.

Dr. Elizabeth Sharpe is a neonatal nurse practitioner, vascular access specialist, and Associate Professor of Clinical Nursing at The Ohio State University. She is the coauthor of the National Association of Neonatal Nurses (NANN) Guideline for Practice: Neonatal Peripherally Inserted Central Catheters, 3rd Edition, and a globally respected expert and author. Dr. Sharpe serves on the National Association of Neonatal Nurses Board of Directors, and has served on the Pediatric Special Interest Group Advisory Board and Vascular Access Certification Corporation Board. Dr. Sharpe was honored to be named the 1st Janet Pettit Scholar by the Association for Vascular Access in 2014, and is a Fellow of the American Association of Nurse Practitioners and the National Academies of Practice.
