We will discuss difficulties encounters as a nurse-run vascular access team under nursing supervision illustrated by historic examples from our institution. We will review how to develop a strong business plan to present to senior hospital leadership in order to demonstrate the value of a vascular access team and obtain necessary resources. We will describe the benefits of partnering with a physician champion, while still maintaining autonomy as a vascular access team.

Dr. Janice McDaniel is a Pediatric Interventional Radiologist at Akron Children's Hospital in Ohio. She attended medical school at the University of Cincinnati and completed radiology residency at the University Hospital in Cincinnati, followed by two fellowships in both Pediatric Radiology and Pediatric Interventional Radiology at Cincinnati Children's Hospital. She relocated to Akron after finishing medical training to start a pediatric interventional radiology program and is the only pediatric interventional radiologist in Northeast Ohio. She also serves as the Division Director of Interventional Radiology and the Medical Director of the Vascular Access Team. In addition, she is on staff at Cleveland Clinic Akron General Hospital. She is Board Certified in Pediatric Radiology and received her VA-BC certification in June 2016, currently serving as question reviewer for the Vascular Access Certification Exam.

Akron Children's Hospital

Teri Stevenson began her nursing career 30 years ago at Akron Children's Hospital in Akron Ohio. Although she has worked at one facility most of her career, she has had many roles. She started out as a Nursing Technician while still in nursing school and knew she would be a "lifer." Being a Staff Nurse, Charge nurse, and Clinical coordinator on the hospital's Infant Unit on night shift is where she cut her teeth. She then started the hospital's PICC and Sedation teams in 2001. Being part of a mobile PICC placement service for 2 years gave Teri insight into the world of PICCs outside the hospital setting. The team has evolved and changed over the years, and last year joined the Interventional Radiology Department. Teri continues to place PICCs today and strives to provide every child with the best vascular access for the needed treatment.
