The main goal of the sutureless securement device is to stabilize and secure the catheter to prevent catheter movement, micropistoning and dislodgement; all which are associated with increased risk of bloodstream infection, complications and premature catheter removal. For many years, there was only 1 catheter securement device available. More recently, newer securement devices have emerged. Deciding whether to implement new technology or continue to utilize existing methods is a hard decision.

Rochelle Griffin has been a nurse for greater than 20 years and involved in caring for patients with centrally placed catheters for the majority of that time. She is currently a member of the Vascular Access/PICC team at Health First Hospitals involved in placing, maintaining and troubleshooting PICC lines and other access devices. She is an active member of both the Infusion Nurses Society and Association of Vascular Access and a key member of the Vascular Access products evaluation team at her facility.
