Background: Blood collection is a routine part of patient care - disliked by many, however understood to be a "necessary evil". This world view does not appropriately consider the developmental and experiential differences between adult and pediatric patients. As a daily occurrence, and one of the few painful, waking portions of care, blood collection can have a severe negative impact on trust in practitioners, and comfort in the resting environment. Frequent blood collection can increase feelings of helplessness and lack-of-control for both patients and their caregivers. All of these issues increase inversely with patient age. This talk will describe the lived experience in a Children’s Surgical Unit, the changes made to improve patient care, and the continuing gaps in patient experience. This talk will not consider the unique nature of neo-natal patients.

Primary Children's Hospital, Intermountain Healthcare

Cassy Weeks has been a nurse for 38 years. She is the Nursing Director of the Children's Surgical Unit at Primary Children's Hospital in Salt Lake City, Utah. She is involved in pain management and partnering with parents/staff to reduce pain & provide comfort measures to patients throughout the inpatient units. She is the hospital chair of the Pain Focus Team working closely with RNs, Physicians and Childlife Staff throughout the hospital to develop innovative approaches to reduce pain and anxiety during procedures. She has been involved with partnering with the Innovations Department at Intermountain Heathcare to trial new processes to eliminate pain during blood draws. She received her BSN from the University of Utah and a Master's in Business from the University of Phoenix.
