Lymphedema is a potential complication of breast cancer related surgery (BCRS). Despite the incidence of lymphedema, its morbidity and impact on a person’s quality of life, the sequela that cause its development remains unknown. This gap in understanding complicates clinicians’ ability to provide useful prevention strategies. Current treatment recommendations are based on anecdotal rather than scientific evidence. This presentation will provide an overview of lymphedema pathophysiology and a critical analysis of current guidelines and scientific evidence specific to venepuncture and vascular access in the ipsilateral arm post BCRS. Recommendations for patient-centred guidelines for vascular access in this patient population will be discussed.

She is a active in health policy, advocacy and research, is a member of the Canadian Association of Vascular Access’ (CVAA) Board of Directors and standards development group, committee member for College of Nurses of Ontario and member of the editorial review board for the Journal of Infusion Nursing and the Journal of Vascular Access. She is also a key-opinion leader for skin health and wound healing, member for policy and advocacy and editorial review board for Diabetic Foot Journal of Canada and has published in peer-review journals and scientific books. .
