K3 — Ultrasound-guided Tip Navigation and Tip Location for Central Venous Access

Monday, September 17
2:30 PM - 3:30 PM
Location: C160
Presentation CE Credits: 1

Ultrasound assessment of the veins before venipuncture and ultrasound-guided venipuncture are commonly used in clinically practice. Though, ultrasound is also a simple and powerful tool for tip navigation and tip location during central line placement. On the basis of the most recent clinical studies published in the literature, we will present different techniques of tip navigation by ultrasound (ultrasound scan of the supra-clavicular area using either linear probes or micro convex probes) as well as different options of ultrasound-based tip location (by trans thoracic echocardiography, adopting different view approaches depending on the age of the patient and the type of device).
We will show that ultrasound-based tip navigation is easier, safer, more accurate and more cost-effective than fluoroscopy or electromagnetic tip navigation.
Also, we will show that ultrasound-based tip location will inevitably become the standard technique in neonates and infants, and will become a precious additional technique of tip location, in association with intracavitary ECG, in children and adults.
