The internet is a cost effective, efficient and easily accessible resource for patients and clinicians seeking information on an infinite number of subjects. Over 80% of internet users report using social media inquiries to search for healthcare information, with over 13000 searches per minute on top 5 search engines alone. This “knowledge” may supplement information given by healthcare professionals or may become the lead source. While information on the internet can be helpful to many patients, inaccurate information brings risks and dangers. An interactive discussion will explore readily available Information regarding vascular access care and comparing this information to the standards of practice. Awareness of the common misconceptions and misinformation found in common search engine results allows the clinician to better target education to guide the patient to appropriate resources and avoid therapeutic misadventures from misinformation.

A pharmacist for over 20 years, Brenda Gray is Owner and Senior Clinician/Consultant for Clinical Pharmacy Partners. She is board certified in vascualr access and nutrition support. She serves on Board of Directors for National Board Nutrition Support Certification, past Board member of CVAA. While having advanced training in vascular access, pediatrics and nutrition support, her primary professional focus is Specialty and Home Infusion. Currently, she serves as a pharmacy accreditation surveyor, educator and consultant. She has board certification in both nutrition support and vascular access. Five years ago she also gained additional expertise as she became a long term parenteral nutrition consumer. Her professional career has been complimented by multiple publications and presentations nationally and internationally. She also currently serves as a leader for the guideline development group for infusion and vascular access guidelines for Canada.

Sheryl McDiarmid is the Advanced Practice Nurse in the Corporate Vascular Access, Apheresis, and Blood and Marrow Transplant Programmes at The Ottawa Hospital. She is currently the President of the Canadian Vascular Access Association and has published extensively in her areas of expertise. Sheryl was the recipient of the Canadian Association of Oncology 2017 Nurses Clinical Lectureship award for her presentation on Lymphedema. Sheryl is also a clinician scientist at The Ottawa Hospital Research Institute where is the principal and co-investigator on a number of studies relevant to vascular access. She holds certification with the Canadian Vascular Access Association in addition to Certified Registered Nurse of Infusion (CRNI).
