O1 — Empowering Vascular Access Specialists: How to Better Inform Patients of Their Options When It Comes to Their Long-term Care

This session challenges the way the vascular access industry thinks about “informed consent” and the device selection, placement, care, and maintenance. One size does not fit all, and will demonstrate why patients should have a larger voice in which vascular access devices used for their perspective therapy. A role play will demonstrate how giving patients the power to weigh in on their options, based on risks and benefits will help to ensure the success of their line, based on their own decision-making process. Having a patient help provide a real-world perspective on informed consent is intended to help shape the way VAS practice day to day. If accepted, I would invite an VAS to roleplay informed consent situations on stage or play video of what successes and failures would look like on both the patient and clinician side.

Emily Levy is a "Professional Patient" who has had three PICC lines and countless peripheral lines over the past 5 years. Emily suffers from Chronic Neurological Lyme disease and co-infections, POTS, and Secondary CIDP. While she is thankful to currently be PICC free, Emily undergoes IVIG therapy once a week. Levy is also the CEO and Co-Founder of Mighty Well whose mission is to transform the patient experience through apparel, gear, and community. Levy is a graduate of Babson College, Class of 2016, with a scholarship for Women's Entrepreneurial Leadership, and the winner of countless awards for her work in patient advocacy. She is proud to be on the Patient and Caregiver Advocacy Committee at AVA.

Since 1993 Matt Gibson has worked in an area of nursing where vascular access was a primary and essential skill. Emergency department, ICU/telemetry, house supervisor, home infusion and long term care vascular access team. In 2000 he realized his passion for vascular access and decided to seek out full time opportunities. Over the last decade Matt has served national and local vascular access organizations, assumed leadership positions in multiple committees as resident advisor and authored the Detective Dane Chronicles. Currently, Matt works with multiple organizations as a vascular access consultant and speaker for various organizations. Matt is certified registered nurse infusion, vascular access board certified and certified PICC ultrasound user. His commitment to vascular access is steadfast by serving of the AVA PIV task force. Matt is the Chief Executive Officer of Vascular Access Consulting, LLC, the past president and founder of the KIVAN and current president of MIVAN.
