Algorithms are used throughout academic, engineering and medical applications to guide decision making. Consideration for the selection of vascular access devices for patients can be guided by algorithms that aid the clinician in simplification of the decision process. Research suggests that clinical pathways and algorithmic tools are beneficial to selection and subsequent positive patient outcomes. Publications such as MAGIC with the online app follow the same process in aiding selection. This presentation will utilize various algorithms from research and active tools used in hospitals as samples for device selection. Applying concepts of the vessel health and preservation model for the first stage assessment and selection with these tools may more readily move the patient toward timely insertion thus facilitating faster treatment and discharge. Integrating algorithms into education of medical providers and bedside nurses further speeds the process of selection and placement

Carole has 20 years’ experience working in various Infection Control nursing roles before moving into Clinical Governance with a broad portfolio. She has been instrumental in developing trust wide surveillance for central venous access devices infections and improvement work to show a reduction of CVAD infections in the trust.

She has held roles with the Infection Prevention Society and is currently Honorary Secretary. Carole has led, on behalf of the IPS, the Vessel Health and Preservation working group and has published and presented this work, with team members, both Nationally and Internationally.

In her spare time she provides voluntary support to a hospital in Romania.
