When nurses at the U. of North Carolina Wayne Memorial realized that patients were struggling with the traditional stockinettes used to cover patients’ PICCs, they spoke with their leadership about alternative solutions. Finding healthwear provider Care+Wear’s Antimicrobial PICC Line Cover at AVA in 2014, the staff was thrilled to utilize the Covers until they realized that the extended double lumens preferred by the hospital were too long to comfortably fit under the short PICC Line cover. Care+Wear and hospital’s nursing team collaborated on a long version of Care+Wear’s PICC Line Cover, with the nursing team providing measurements from patients and feedback. The resulting product showed improved patient experiences and was also used at other hospitals who placed their PICC Lines differently. The project demonstrates how direct implementation of clinician feedback and how taking ownership of patient needs can result in the implementation of the most effective products for patients.
