I6 — Impact of Hospitalization on Child and Family in Growth & Development

As a nursing profession, we have practiced under the guidance of the historic developmental theories. The nursing care of children and their families has long been based on developmental milestones and behaviors, but what has changed? What have we learned about the impact of hospitalization on children's development? Have we moved beyond Erikson and Piaget? In this session, we will discuss the most recent literature findings on providing developmentally-appropriate care to children and their families in the hospitalized setting.

• describe the historical developmental theories of Piaget and Erickson.
• discuss the implications of acute and chronic hospitalization on the developmental level of a child.
• identify opportunities to engage children in developmentally appropriate activities related to vascular access safety.
